Bottle Cap Rosettes DIY Craft Project

Don't toss those bottle caps just yet. You can use them – and some felt – to create this project from Amber Sarker, a metro Detroit felt crafter.

Bottle Cap Rosettes DIY Craft Project

Last month, I visited the March Small Craft Skillshare event in Ferndale, here in southeast Michigan. Small Craft is a monthly meet-up of folks who love to craft and love to share their skills with others. The month's featured project was hosted by Amber Sarker, a metro Detroit felt crafter, of handleber. Sarker taught guests how to make felt rosettes out of scrap felt and bottle caps. Many of us have leftover bottle caps, right? Once created, these rosettes can turn into magnets, key chains, pendants and more – so many possibilities. Here's Sarker's project for you to try with your crafting kids this weekend.

Materials

  • Felt scraps
  • Scissors
  • Hot glue and gun
  • Bottle caps

Instructions

1. Start by cutting your piece of felt to 3-by-3 inches.
2. Next, cut out around the square to create a long tail of felt. Wiggle your scissors as you go for fun shapes. Don't cut the strand too small! Keep cutting out your strand until you've got less than a 1-inch circle of fabric left at the tail.
3. With the end you started cutting, start rolling the fabric up to build your rosette. Apply hot glue to the bottom of the rosette and place the end circle on top of the glue to hold everything in place.
4. Apply a liberal amount of hot glue into the bottle cap. Place your rosette into the bottle cap and press firmly into place. Let cool.
5. With your bottle cap rosette, you can add a magnet to the back, a pinback for a brooch or a pendant "finding" to add to your favorite necklace.
