DIY LEGO Minifig Display Magnets

This easy project lets kids display their favorite minifigurines on the refrigerator or any other magnetic surface by creating a small 'perch' for the figs to snap on to

DIY LEGO Minifig Display Magnets

While browsing LEGO.com the other day, I was excited to see new minifigure magnets from the DC Universe Super Heroes line. As I started to read the fine print, I saw this: "Minifigure is not detachable from decorated backplate." What?! That's no good! In years past, the LEGO minifig magnets DID have detachable magnets, allowing you to switch up the featured fig on the fridge. This week's Make It offers a simple, DIY solution so that your favorite minifigs can grace any magnetic surface. Note: For various bricks and baseplates, check out the LEGO store online.

Materials

  • 2-by-4 LEGO bricks
  • 1-by-4 LEGO brick baseplates
  • Toothpicks
  • Epoxy
  • Scrap paper
  • Strong magnets

Instructions

1. Mix the epoxy on the scrap piece of paper with a toothpick. Apply a thin line of epoxy all around the underside of your baseplate.
2. Carefully set the baseplate on one of the long sides of your LEGO brick so that the studs (the "bumps" on top of the bricks) are facing out. Let the two pieces dry completely for 1-2 hours before attaching your magnet. Remove any excess epoxy with a clean toothpick.
3. Once the two bricks are glued together and dry, apply a liberal amount of epoxy on one side of the round magnet.
4. Gently place the magnet on the back side of the bricks and let dry; make sure the studs are facing down so the magnet doesn't slip while drying. Wait 1-2 hours before placing these magnets on a magnetic surface.
5. Attach your minifig to the top of the magnet.
6. Create more. Display with pride!
