Hanukkah Picture Frame Craft for Kids

Create a Hanukkah picture frame craft with your kids. It's fun and affordable little keepsake – and a sweet way to display a family memory of this year's holiday.

Happy Hanukkah! For most holidays, families do their crafting before the actual date or dates – which makes sense. But what about a DIY project that captures memories after the event has passed? That’s what we set out to do with our Hanukkah picture frame craft.

Making a keepsake to remember a favorite moment from the holidays is a great way to surprise a grandparent or family friend who helped celebrate with your own family.

Preserve a special moment from Hanukkah by having your child customize a simple wooden picture frame.

This small frame, found in the wood craft aisle of your local craft store, doesn’t have a piece of glass with it, making it budget friendly at the time of purchase – and when it’s ready to be mailed to someone far from home.

Using blues, whites and silvers, your child can additional decorations, such as a favorite Hanukkah stamp, to make this memento one of a kind.

Materials

  • 3.5-inch square wooden picture frame
  • Acrylic craft paints (whites, blues, silvers)
  • Paintbrushes
  • Washi tape or painter’s tape
  • Stamps and stamp pads (or drawing supplies)
  • Hot glue and glue gun
  • Thick cardstock
  • Additional decorating supplies

Instructions

1. Start out by painting each side of the frame white on one side and blue on the other. Paint the sides of the frame, too. Let the paint dry completely.

2. While the blue and white paints are drying, have your child stamp their designs. I love this set of Hanukkah stamps I found from Yellow Owl Workshop back in 2014; for something similar, try this stamper by Rubberhedgehog on Etsy. Or simply draw your own! Add a date to the stamped design if you like.

3. To get ready to add the silver paint, mask off the center sections of the picture frame to create a crisp paint line. Washi tape works well as it’s easy to remove; you can also use good old-fashioned painter’s tape, though. Add the silver paint, remove the tape and let dry.

4. Once the silver paint has dried completely, add the stamped designs your child made to the front of the frame with a small amount of hot glue. With the designs in place on the frame you’re ready to add a favorite picture or drawing from your children.
