Easy Cotton Beanbags Craft for Family Summer Fun

With a bit of outdoor fabric and simple hand stitching action, parents and kids can create a batch of bean-filled bags that are prime for some backyard fun

Easy Cotton Beanbags Craft for Family Summer Fun

Does your family have a classic lawn game they enjoy, especially during the warm summer months? My family and friends love beanbag-based games like cornhole and juggling. Beanbags are great to have on hand for a variety of games, both for children and adults. These game staples are easy to make and are a nifty way to get the kids involved filling bags, trimming the edges and learning simple sewing skills. Check the craft store clearance home decorating fabric to create the bags – they're much easier to keep clean and tidy summer after summer!

Materials

  • Outdoor-weight fabric (found in the home decorating section at the fabric store)
  • Scissors
  • Beans
  • Ruler
  • Pinking shears
  • Sewing machine and thread
  • 2/3 measuring cup (I had only a 1/3 cup on hand, so I used two full scoops to fill the bags)

Instructions

1. Start out by cutting out two 5-by-5-inch fabric squares. If you're going to make several bags, cut all of your fabric squares at once so that assembly is more like that of an assembly line.
2. Putting wrong sides facing together so that your design is facing outward, sew three sides of the fabric sandwich, leaving the top open.
3. Using your measuring cup, fill the beanbags. You don't want them too full, so that they're not too hard to sew shut! Once full, sew the bag shut.
4. "Pink" the edges of the bag with your pinking shears, making sure not clip the seams you just created.
5. Get ready to toss the bags around!
