Patriotic Pennants for Decoration on Independence Day

No matter how your family celebrates it, Independence Day is the sort of holiday that can go all summer long – thanks to picnics, pool parties, visits to the beach and backyard summer vacation fun. And since the kids are on vacation, why not introduce them to some cool crafts and get them geeked about DIY delights! Get your kids into the spirit of the Fourth by crafting some easy-to-make patriotic pennants. Below, we've got a list of everything you need to get started, plus a free download to help you achieve the perfect pennant.

Materials

  • 1 sheet FriendlyFelt (stiffened felt) in your choice of red, white or blue
  • 1 sheet each of PrestoFelt (adhesive-backed felt) in red, white and blue
  • 1 craft dowel about 3/8" thick
  • Scissors
  • Pen
  • Ruler
  • Craft knife
  • Hot glue gun and glue sticks (optional)

Instructions

  1. Download your free pennant template to the right. Cut it out and trace it onto the stiffened felt. Cut out the pennant.
  2. Cut the adhesive-backed felt into half-inch strips. Then, cut several pieces to 2 inches in length. Set aside.
  3. Cut additional smaller pieces of felt into little squares and rectangles so you have a variety of shapes for your pennant.
  4. Once you've cut as many pieces as you'd like, remove the paper backing from the adhesive felt and stick into place on the front of the pennant.
  5. To finish, cut two small slits into the top and bottom of the left side of pennant. Insert a dowel through the slits. If the pennant is slipping down the dowel, try adding a drop of hot glue just below the openings to attach the dowel to the felt.
  6. You can keep your dowel long, for attaching to the back of a wagon, or cut it in half. It's all up to you!
