Stick Garden Markers Family Craft

Help kids identify the different plants, flowers and herbs you're growing in the yard with these DIY creations that are easy and fun to make

Stick Garden Markers Family Craft

Do you like to garden? How's the garden looking so far this year? If your green thumbs have been busy potting plants, cleaning gardens and getting vegetable seeds ready for tasty salads to come, don't forget to mark them so you know what's what. You and your crafters can whip up a set of quick-to-make garden markers with just a few supplies. For "budding" gardeners, create a set to help them learn to identify plants in your family's garden – or give names to plants they're caring for this season. Giving a gift? Why not turn your marker into a gift tag by adding the recipient's name to the front?

Materials

  • Jumbo wooden craft sticks
  • Acrylic craft paint – light colors
  • Painter's tape
  • Outdoor Mod Podge
  • Foam brushes
  • Fine-tipped Sharpie marker – dark colors

Instructions

1. Start out by applying the painter's tape to the center of your craft stick. You could also make a diagonal mark or even just to the top – it's up to you.
2. Paint one side of your craft stick and let dry. Apply additional coats if needed to achieve your desired shade.
3. Once the front is dry, paint the back of the stick, too. Again, let dry. Remove the painter's tape.
4. On the painted side of the stick, write your word. Let the marker dry thoroughly before the next step.
5. Apply a thin coat of Outdoor Mod Podge to your garden marker. Follow the package's instructions for the proper drying times before adding to your plant.
6. Behold, your beautiful creation!
