Washi Tape Button Brooches Craft for Mother's Day

Surprise the special woman in your life with this handmade creation that's a great DIY accessory to any outfit – and something kids can make.

Washi Tape Button Brooches Craft for Mother's Day

Recently, my mother showed me a carefully saved coupon book I had made for her for Mother's Day in 1988. The book still had a few coupons (luckily she never redeemed the "take out the trash" one!) left from this school-made gift. If your crafters are asking for Mother's Day ideas for last-minute inspiration, have them make a batch of these washi tape button brooches. A vintage button adds a lot of fun to this accessory, but any ol' button will do. The completed disk can be added to a pendant, a magnet – or even a bookmark.

Materials

  • Wooden disc (2-inch)
  • Washi tape
  • Mod Podge Satin
  • Foam brush
  • X-ACTO knife or small scissors
  • Pinback
  • Hot glue
  • Button

Instructions

1. Start out by placing your first strip of washi tape onto the disk. Make sure it overlaps all the way around; that way, you'll know you'll get a clean cut when you go to trim.
2. Cover the entire disk.
3. Turn the disk over to trim the excess tape away. For older crafters, use an X-ACTO knife on a safe cutting service. For younger crafters, assist them with a small pair of scissors, like embroidery or cuticle scissors.
4. After the tape has been trimmed, apply a thin layer of Mod Podge to the top and sides of the disk. Let dry.
5. Once the Mod Podge is dry, add your pinback to the back of the disk. Again, let dry.
6. For the finishing touch, add a new or vintage button to the front of washi tape disk.
