Turkey Centerpiece for Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is all about gathering to give thanks – and gobble-gobble a family meal! If you’re hosting the grub this year, you don’t need to spend loads of cash on decor for your dinner table. Instead, create a centerpiece crafted by your kids to set off the dinner table. This gives kids the chance to contribute to the holiday meal, especially if they aren’t helping out in the kitchen this year. This colorful, silly bird gets its shape from a smooth Styrofoam half globe available in most craft stores.

Materials

  • 8-inch Styrofoam half globe
  • Feather template (click on the image to the right to download the template)
  • Brown craft paint
  • Foam paintbrush
  • Glue stick
  • Construction paper in harvest colors (brown, yellow, orange, etc.)
  • Washi tape
  • Hot-glue sticks and glue gun
  • Medium and large circle punches
  • Scissors
  • Toothpicks
  • Googly eyes (optional)
  • Markers (optional)

Directions

  1. Paint the half globe brown. The smooth surface makes this easy, but it does require at least two coats. Let the paint dry thoroughly in between. In the meantime, work on the turkey’s body.
  2. To create the front of the turkey, punch a large circle from a brown piece of paper. Punch a medium circle from orange paper. Attach the orange circle to the brown. Add googly eyes or let your child create the turkey face however she likes. We gave ours a silly, oversized wattle.
  3. For the feathers, download, print and cut out our feather template. Trace onto construction paper. You can stick to all one color, or give the turkey varied plumage. Add washi tape to the feathers, if you like, for extra flair.
  4. Use a small piece of washi tape to attach a toothpick to the back of each feather.
  5. To assemble, hot-glue the body to the front of the globe. Insert the feathers into the top of the globe, staggering as you go to create a full look.
