India is an Exciting Summer Vacation Treat
A young child recalls this fun trip to the family's home country for a wedding – from a first plane ride to a trip in an auto-rickshaw, and meeting distant relatives
I was very excited when my mom told me that we are visiting India this summer to attend my mom's brother's wedding. My mom's and dad's relatives all are in India, and they were going to see us after three years. I packed my bags, my books and some snacks for the trip. On that day, we reached the airport and I opened my fruit snacks and started munching. We went inside the plane. The seatbelt was very funny! I had butterflies in my tummy when flight took off. I was holding my mommy until I felt safe.
After changing three flights, we reached Bangalore India. I was very tired. It was very hot and there were lots of people. I met my cousin's sister and we went to the park next day. My grandparents were very happy to see me and my brother. I was excited to see cows, buffalos, pigs, cats and dogs in grandpa's yard.
It was fun to ride in the auto-rickshaw – a three-wheel taxi. The wedding was in a different town. We had a fun trip in the bus with special food and singing songs and making new friends. The wedding went on for two days. The first day was the introduction of families, and the second day was the wedding and reception. There were a lot of people wearing colorful and sparkling clothes. The food was very spicy but tasty. There were fireworks and a horse ride for the groom.
After the wedding, it was time to return back. I was sad to leave all my relatives but excited to see my friends in the U.S. and spend the remaining summer (here). When grandparents came to say bye at the airport, mommy had tears in her eyes.
At the Frankfurt airport, a strange thing happened! I had to go to restroom alone. When I came back, I did not see mommy and daddy. I looked everywhere … scared … confused! I had tears in my eyes. All of a sudden, I saw mommy in the crowd looking for me. I ran to her and gave her a big hug! In the flight home, I kept thinking about what had happened. I knew why mommy had tears in her eyes when she said goodbye to her mommy and daddy. In just two minutes, I missed her so much – but she was not going meet her mommy and daddy for another three years!
