Tulip Time Festival and Saugatuck Fun

Blooming flowers, parades, art galleries, delicious fish dinners and strolls along a Kalamazoo River beach made for a perfect family vacation

Tulip Time Festival and Saugatuck Fun

This year, we went to a celebration of Dutch heritage – and got to see the most eye-popping, jaw-dropping parades during the Tulip Time Festival in Holland, Mich. We witnessed the early bloom of the hundreds of thousands of tulips. Gov. Rick Snyder frolicked in the fun at his luncheon address.

Our journey continued when we arrived at Saugatuck, Mich. Our first stop was the Janice Miles Gallery, where we saw watercolors by the local British artist. We then went to the Thistle Gallery to see fine fused glass creations and other works from different media. Before checking into the bed-and-breakfast hotel, The Twin Cables Inn, we feasted on some potato-crusted whitefish at the Elbo Room.

Next, we took for a leisurely walk by one of many beaches, which overlooked the Kalamazoo River. The rest of our weekend getaway consisted of dune rides, a chain ferry and just mellowing out in Saugatuck.

This summer story will remain permanently etched in my head forever as the absolute best.
