New Year's Fun
Ready to bid '09 bye-bye? Help your family give the new decade a fresh welcome with activities all around southeast Michigan – from tonight's ball drop to light 'n fun ways to clinch your kids' winter vacation.
Kick off 2010 in family-style with plenty of confetti-worthy fare. The annual Northville Nite returns with a country/western theme, packed with carnival games, crafts, face-painting, huge inflatable games – and a bedtime-friendly 8 p.m. countdown. Rather celebrate all day? Try the pajama party over at Zoobilee Play Cafe in Ypsilanti. Birmingham also brings back its evening Family New Year Blast, filled with magic, puppetry and theater – while downtown Mount Clemens offers a "gala" event with fireworks, karaoke and more. Or, for those who prefer a faster, more hands-on pace, the go-karts and mini golf at Howell's Great Escape are where it's at.
Then, why not mark the New Year by traveling back in time – about 250 million years? Spectacular theatrical arena show Walking With Dinosaurs rules Detroit's Cobo Arena once more, featuring 15 roaring, stomping animatronic dinos, from the T-rex to the Stegosaurs. This mesmerizing menagerie last visited in '07. It's showing through Sunday; after that, the chance to see it goes extinct!
That's not all the first weekend of 2010 has in store. Get in gear at the 29th annual International Motorcycle Show, sporting high-throttle demos, live music and, of course, hundreds of tricked-out 'cycles, scooters and other rides. There's fun for the kiddies, too. It hits Novi's Rock Financial Showplace Friday-Sunday. A LEGO-building event at the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn on Saturday helps wrap up its marvelous exhibit on the famous blocks. And, as you're winding down that winter break, consider the vacation party at The Candy Trail in Plymouth, featuring magic and cupcakes. Or, in Detroit, catch stage show Shen Yun, a display of traditional Chinese dance.
However you celebrate it, have a happy, healthy New Year!
