Old-Fashioned Holidays

Old-Fashioned Holidays

Got a hankerin' for the simpler stuff this holly-jolly time of year? Turn to this weekend for your cure to seasonal-extravagance overload.

Start by turning back the clock at Little House on the Prairie: The Musical, playing at Detroit's Fox Theatre now through Saturday. Based on Laura Ingalls Wilder's cherished book series, the classic tale of an American family forging a new life stars Melissa Gilbert as "Ma" – the same actress who played young Laura on the popular '70s TV series.

On Saturday evening only, don't miss Noel Night in Midtown Detroit. This 37th annual cultural "open house" boasts free entry to the Detroit Institute of Arts, Detroit Science Center and loads more. Plus, soak up the downtown holiday vibe with horse-drawn carriage rides, family craft activities and shows by 70-plus local music, theater and dance groups – all topped off the Salvation Army Band's community sing-along.

Then, rustle up the family for plenty of quaint happenings all over town. How about a holiday Hayride with Santa? It's happening at the Howell Nature Center this Friday and Saturday, plus Dec. 11-12. Or venture to the small-town shops in Ann Arbor’s Kerrytown District this Friday, when it hosts its first KindleFest featuring local food, art, music, festive fire pits and more. And it wouldn't be a vintage Christmas without Holiday Nights at Greenfield Village in Dearborn. Set for select dates this Friday through Dec. 27, it's home to Model T rides, ice skating, fireworks and much more.

Rather see a classical stage show to get into the mood? Go nuts for The Nutcracker, which is playing in at least four local theaters. Try the Cincinnati Ballet's version at the Detroit Opera House, now through Sunday; at Clinton Township's Macomb Center for the Performing Arts, Friday-Saturday; in Chelsea as performed by the Youth Dance Theatre of Michigan, Friday-Sunday; and with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, featuring a kid-friendly Saturday showing.

Keep your spirits bright – and be sure to keep warm (snow's finally on it's way!) – this weekend.
