Autos, Snow 'n More

Autos, Snow 'n More

How about a collective hug for the Motor City? It could sure use it. Your family has its chance starting this Saturday, when the North American International Auto Show opens to the public at Cobo Center in Detroit. Running till next Sunday, Jan. 24, be sure to take a spin in the latest hybrids and electrics over at the MEDC EcoXperience track. And, with 700 displays to scope out – plus a food court – there's plenty to fill whichever day you choose.

Rather chug-chug in something a tad more old-fashioned? The Troy Train Show returns on Sunday, delivering 350-plus tables of choo-choos, free trains ride for the kiddies (weather permitting), a movie starring "America's Favorite Train" (guess who?), refreshments and loads more. Admission's still $3, and kids 12 and under get in at no charge.

On stage, a Van Buren staging of Snow White on Friday caught our attention: It's free, family friendly and audience-participation driven!

OK, Gen Y parents, this one's for you. Remember East Lansing band The Verve Pipe (known for '96 hit "The Freshmen")? They're back – with a kids' CD. Simply titled A Family Album, they'll be playing it live at Ann Arbor's Hill Auditorium on Saturday. And if you prefer something newer-school – and have tween girls – you're probably already well aware that Nick Jonas and the Administration is hitting the Fox Theatre in Detroit on Saturday (leaving you just enough time to recuperate from Wednesday's Lady Gaga show).

How about some snowsnake and atlatl throwing to get your blood pumping? These icy fun games return as part of Erie Ice Daze, heading to Brownstown's Lake Erie Metropark this weekend. There's dog mushing, an ice-fishing-for-beginners clinic (limited space), Ice Age walk, crafts and loads more – plus some indoor star gazing to warm you up.

Two more cool ways to chill: On Saturday, swing by the Farmington Hills Ice Arena for a free skating program; then, wrap things up Sunday at the Winterfest in Oak Park, packed with hayrides, ice carvings and more.

Don't forget to check our Calendar for Monday Martin Luther King Jr. events, too!
