'Back to Weekend' Time
It's been a busy first week of 2010. And we think your family deserves a little break from all the back-to-school, work and other routines. We'd like to think of it as going "back-to-weekend." Here's a bit get you started (and, as always, browse our Calendar for oodles of other ideas!).
Chill in Royal Oak at the Detroit Zoo, when the critter hotspot's favorite Wild Winter Weekends return. Step right up this Saturday and Sunday fun-for-all carnival-themed day of games, live entertainment, face painting – and a chance to explore habitats both indoors and outside. (Save the dates: An "African Adventure" is Feb. 6-7, and the "Safari Social" arrives March 6-7.)
On Saturday, celebrate the snow at "Cold Rush": Warren's Winter Wonder Event. The festivities unfurl at City Square with an ice carving show (including a chance for amateurs to hone their chops) and free ice skating (skate rental is just $3/hour – plus, arrive early for a 9-11 a.m. learn-to-skate clinic, also free!). Stick around for ice-skating shows by the Troy Sports Center Figure Skating Club, too, and a new battle-of-the-bands competition.
Resolve to add a dash of diversity to your kids' weekend with the Mochitsuki Japanese New Year Celebration, returning to Ann Arbor on Saturday afternoon. This family favorite features making and tasting mochi (Japanese rice cakes) and hearing kamishibai (Japanese storytelling) – not to mention origami, manga drawing, and live tunes including Miyabi (koto music) and Raion Taiko (taiko drumming). (Hint: Westsider? Check out Japanese folklore-inspired Crane Maiden, also Saturday at Detroit's PuppetART theater. While you're at it, win a season pass to this little gem!)
And if you're looking to please a "special interest" or two, there's plenty to scope out. Your doll collector won't want to miss the mother-daughter American Girl Brunch in Huntington Woods on Saturday. Got a gear head? For the first time, the Henry Ford Museum is hosting Engines Exposed: It's popping the hoods to 50 of its old-school autos starting Saturday (something to tide you over till the auto show returns next weekend!). Or cross the border to check out Robots Among Us, Windsor's Community Museum's display of cool vintage android toys that wraps up Saturday.
And if the weather's just too frightening, think like a king: Elvis Presley's annual birthday celebration runs through Sunday. Skip a trip to Graceland: Try your hand at some trivia – or just fire up YouTube and transform your family room into sing-along central.
Whatever you do, make this weekend a hunka-hunka burnin' fun!
