Jurassic Journey Dinosaur Exhibit at HYPE Recreation Center in Dearborn Heights

Bring your kids to welcome the Burning Tree Mastodon to Michigan at this special southeast Michigan attraction, in Wayne County May 2-12, 2013

Calling all potential paleontologists! For the first time ever the Burning Tree Mastodon visits metro Detroit for the Jurassic Journey Dinosaur Exhibit at the HYPE Athletic Center in Dearborn Heights, May 2-12, 2013.

Discovered in 1989, the 11,600-year-old skeleton is the most studied and complete remains of any animal – and at 14 feet tall, it's the third largest mastodon ever found.

Evidence exists that the 10,000-pound animal was slain by the Clovis people 9,600 years before humans were thought to exist in this area. Scientists deduced this information from the flint markings on the animal's ribs.

Add to that the fact that its intestines contained eight species of live bacteria never before found on earth, and you would think that this exhibit could be its own show. But there's more.

In addition to the Burning Tree Mastodon, attendees can see the Dilophosaurus, Greek for two-ridged lizard. This guy measured around 20 feet long and weighed as much as half a ton, with fish and meat as his favorite foods.

See both of these, and over 50 other different dinosaur replicas, in a 90-minute guided tour.

The exhibit runs 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday-Friday and 9 a.m.-7:30 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

Ticket prices are $12 for ages 14 and up, $6 for ages 4-13 and free ages 3 and under.

The HYPE Athletics Community is a charitable non-profit organization founded in 2001. Its mission is to provide services and events that strengthen the infrastructures of family through education, social services, athletics and physical fitness.
