Bathroom Spring Cleaning Checklist

Haven't kept up on scrubbing your tub or shower? Now is the time to clean up this much-used space – with these helpful tips.

Has it been a while since you took a scrub brush to the shower? If your tiles have seen better days and have been taken over by soap scum, it's time to apply some elbow grease – along with a good cleaning product!

"Most people dread cleaning the shower because they haven't been keeping up with it," says Debra Johnson, a curriculum manager for Merry Maids, a national cleaning service, who has 16 years professional cleaning experience. "There's no magic wand to get it clean easily." Her advice is to give the shower a thorough scrub down as part of your spring cleaning and then to pledge to go over it more frequently.

"Really cleaning it more regularly is better than using harsh chemicals," notes Johnson. That said, Johnson has a method when it comes to ridding the shower of soap scum: "Always let the product set on the shower surface for three to five minutes before you start scrubbing – it needs time to break down the soap scum."

You should also keep in mind this tip from another cleaning pro: "It's important to remember how necessary it is to keep your sponges from your bathroom and your kitchen separate," says Anne Albright, a spokesperson for Armaly Brands out of Walled Lake, makers of Brillo cleaning pads and sponges. "It is appalling to hear the number of people who use the same sponge throughout their entire house – yuck!"

Ready to start your bathroom spring cleaning? This checklist can help you get started:

  1. Remove items from the shower and toss things like loofahs, sponges and poufs that may have mildew.
  2. Spray soap scum cleaner on the shower or bathtub surface and let it sit.
  3. Launder bath mats and towels.
  4. Dust decorative items that may be on display in your bathroom.
  5. Wash and/or replace shower curtains and liners.
  6. Wash the walls going from top to bottom.
  7. Wash baseboards, door ceilings, windowsills and doors.
  8. Vacuum vents.
  9. Dust blinds.
  10. Wash windows on the inside and out.
  11. Take down light fixtures and wash (you may be able to do this in the dishwasher).
  12. Wipe down any picture frames and mirrors using glass cleaner.
  13. Wipe down all surfaces such as countertops and cupboards.
  14. Wipe down toilet exterior and seat cover.
  15. Use a toilet scrub brush and cleaning product to wash the toilet bowl.
  16. Organize items in closets, cupboards or drawers – throw out any items you haven't used in the past year.
  17. Scrub the shower and/or bathtub with a scrub brush.
  18. Use a small brush to get into shower door tracts to clean them out.
  19. Wipe down the bathroom floor, using a wet rag to clean and another towel to dry.
  20. Sit back and relax knowing your bathroom is spic and span.
