Ahh, August. The final throes of summer are upon us. And school is just far enough away to ignore a tiny bit longer. Why not really dive in – and indulge in some of the fun packed community fairs and festivals happening all around town? Michigan-focused wares, Greek and Renaissance good times, heritage events, and loads of food and music – find a fest that fits your family.

Farmington Hills Family Funfest

Aug. 2-5, 2012

  • Where: Founders Sports Park, Farmington Hills
  • Times: 5-11 p.m. Thursday-Friday, noon-11 p.m. Saturday, noon-9 p.m. Sunday
  • Costs: Free/general, $18/all-day wristbands

This four-day community shebang features a carnival, rides, games, food and plenty of fun for kids. Petting zoo and pony rides, too!

Allen Park Downtown Street Fair

Aug. 3-4, 2012

  • Where: downtown Allen Park
  • Times: 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Friday-Saturday
  • Costs: Free

Swing by this 31st annual for crafters, food, entertainment expanding to a second stage, children's activities and fun for all.

Dearborn Homecoming Festival

Aug. 3-5, 2012

  • Where: Ford Field Park, Dearborn
  • Times: 11 a.m.-10:30 p.m. Friday-Sunday
  • Costs: Free/general, $13-$18/wristbands, $3-$10/parking

There are three days of carnival, Civil War reenactments, children's games, entertainments and fireworks Saturday and Sunday.

Buy Michigan Now Festival

Aug. 3-5, 2012

  • Where: downtown Northville
  • Times: noon-9 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Saturday, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday
  • Costs: Free

Sidewalk sales, street vendors, live music, a kids' zone with magic, music mascots and more children's activities and lots of dining options.

Celebrate Oxford

Aug. 3-5, 2012

  • Where: downtown Oxford
  • Times: 5-9 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Saturday, noon-5 p.m. Sunday
  • Costs: Free, $10/ride wristbands (or buy individual tickets)

The town parties down with music, food, classic car show and "Kids Town," along with art and exhibits.

Thunder Over Michigan Air Show

Aug. 4-5, 2012

  • Where: The Yankee Air Museum, Willow Run Airport, Ypsilanti
  • Times: 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday-Sunday
  • Costs: $25-$30/adults, free/kids 15 and under, $5-$10/parking

Over 25 P-51 Mustangs offer a rare show as they soar overhead. There's a WWII battle reenactment, too.

Jazz on the River

Aug. 4-5, 2012

  • Where: Elizabeth Park on Jefferson Street, Trenton
  • Times: Starts at 1 p.m. Saturday-Sunday
  • Costs: Free

This free jazz fest is now headed into its 17th year with lots of local cool jazz talent.
