African World Festival

Aug. 17-19, 2012

  • Where: Grounds of the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, 315 E. Warren Ave., Detroit
  • Times: noon-11:30 p.m. Saturday-Sunday
  • Costs: Free

Global music, 200 master craftsmen, dancers and food from "across the Diaspora" merge to mark African culture for year 30. Visit the kids' Watoto Village, too.

Woodward Dream Cruise

Aug. 18, 2012 (unofficially starts earlier in week)

  • Where: Woodward Avenue, Ferndale-Pontiac, Oakland County
  • Times: 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Saturday
  • Costs: Free

Concerts, dances, parades, events for kids and an official ribbon cutting all preface the massive 50,000-vehicle parade of classic autos down M-1.

Michigan Renaissance Festival

Aug. 18-Sept. 30, 2012 (weekends only/rain or shine)

  • Where: 12500 Dixie Highway at Hollygrove grounds, Holly
  • Times: 10 a.m.-7 p.m. weekends
  • Costs: $20.95/adults, $11.95/ages 5-12

Experience the 16th century like nowhere else with full-contact armor jousting, shows, themed weekends and hearty legendary feasts.

War of 1812 Muster

Aug. 18-19, 2012

  • Where: Greenfield Village, 20900 Oakwood Blvd., Dearborn
  • Times: 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday-Sunday
  • Costs: Free with admission: $24/adults, $17.50/kids, free/4 and under, $5/parking

The Porches and Parlors District is alive with citizen soldiers, craftsmen, merchants and more, all in period dress.

Chelsea Community Fair

Aug. 21-25, 2012

  • Where: Chelsea Community Fairgrounds, 20501 Old US-12 Highway, Chelsea
  • Times: noon-10 p.m. Tuesday, 10 a.m.-10 p.m. Wednesday-Saturday
  • Costs: $7/adults, free/10 and under, $20/ride wristband

C'mon by this decades-old fair for demolition derbies, livestock judging, tractor pulls, crafts, exhibits, midway games, grub and oodles more.

Lincoln Park Days

Aug. 24-26, 2012

  • Where: Youth Center Park, 1801 Gregory Ave., Lincoln Park
  • Times: Vary by day
  • Costs: Free

It's a full-on carnival in front and a midway in back. Lots of food, kids' games and a car show on Sunday.

Warren Birthday Bash

Aug. 23-26, 2012

  • Where: City Square, Van Dyke Avenue north of 12 Mile Road, Warren
  • Times: noon-10 p.m. Thursday, noon-11 p.m. Friday-Saturday, noon-9 p.m. Sunday
  • Costs: Free

Celebrate at Thursday family movie, carnival, Friday fireworks, the Totally Artrageous Art Show, a Taste of the Community and special Saturday fun for kids.

Saline Community Fair

Aug. 28-Sept. 3, 2012

  • Where: Washtenaw Farm Council Grounds, 5055 Ann Arbor-Saline Road, Saline
  • Times: Vary by day
  • Costs: $7/ages 11-plus, free/under 10, $18/ride armbands ($10 on Monday)

Visit for the carnival rides and classic lures like a demolition derby, tractor pulls, rides, parade and the Miss Saline crowning.

Michigan Peach Festival of Romeo

Aug. 30-Sept. 3, 2012

  • Where: 32 Mile and Van Dyke roads, downtown Romeo area
  • Times: 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday-Monday
  • Costs: $1/admission, free/ages 12 and under

This annual gala is in full swing for an 80th year of festivities including a KidsFest Saturday, car show Sunday and Floral Parade on Monday.

Arts, Beats & Eats

Aug. 31-Sept. 3, 2012

  • Where: Main and Troy streets, downtown Royal Oak
  • Times: 11 a.m.-11 p.m. Friday-Sunday, 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Monday
  • Costs: $3/tickets

This annual blast has samples from 50-plus restaurants, plus 200 music performers, 130 artists and kids' fun. Admission is $3.
