Westland Summer Festival

Celebrate the season with a carnival, circus fun for kids and exotic animal exhibits at the annual Westland Summer Festival, heading to town June 29-July 3, 2012.

This popular annual festival, which normally attracts a tremendous amount of people, includes fun activities such as a white tiger exhibit and the popular Banana Derby, where small monkeys ride racing dogs like jockeys.

Just for kids, be sure to check out the interactive workshops with Cirque Amongus, a hands-on circus, as well as a petting zoo with pony rides.

An array of carnival rides are here, too. You can buy unlimited ride armbands for $16 online, or for $20 at the festival.

Local entertainment this year includes performances by Guardian Martial Arts & Fitness of Garden City and Jenney Lynn's Baton Twirling Academy. Looking for tunes, too? There'll be a Beatles cover band, plus Full Throttle Acapella, young country band Annabelle Road and rock cover band Rusty Lunchbox.

The Miles for Memories fundraiser for the Alzheimer's Association takes place on Saturday. Registration is at 9 a.m., and the walk begins at 10 a.m.

There's also a muscle car show for veterans on Saturday, happening 9 a.m.-3 p.m., sponsored by Choice Insurance.

Local nonprofit organizations hold a bake sale on Sunday from noon to 3 p.m. And the Independence Day fireworks light the sky on Wednesday at 10:20 p.m.

There is free parking at John Glenn High School and William P. Faust Library, along with a shuttle service to get families around.

The Westland Summer Festival occurs on the following days:

  • Friday: 4 p.m.-midnight
  • Saturday-Sunday: Noon-midnight
  • Monday-Tuesday: 4 p.m.-midnight
  • Wednesday: Noon-midnight
