Mount Clemens Family Christmas

These Mount Clemens venues welcome families for a day of holiday fun on Dec. 4, 2011

When you think of metro Detroit’s cultural hubs, you don’t usually think of Macomb County ’burb Mount Clemens. But perhaps you should. It happens to house three cultural gems: The Crocker House Museum, the Anton Art Center and the Michigan Transit Museum.

These family-friendly locales are teaming for a free day of holiday fun during the second annual Mount Clemens Family Christmas event, which takes place from 1-4 p.m. on Dec. 4.

Bring your cameras to the Crocker House Museum, where kids will get the chance to meet with Santa. Michigan author Nola McDonald, who pens historical fiction like the young adult book Hattie’s New Century, will be on hand to read to children, too.

Kids can make scrap art cookie ornaments. The ornaments, an old Victorian Christmas tradition, are a sugar cookie decorated with cut outs from last year's Christmas cards. Clearly, these are cookies that can’t be consumed. Kids also can watch silent Christmas movies and enjoy caroling accompanied by an old-fashioned organ.

Parents: Take some time to check out the museum, which was built in 1869 and was home to the first two mayors in Mount Clemens. The entire museum is dressed up for the holidays and docents in each room will be talking about the history of the home.

Just a couple miles away, the Anton Art Center welcomes families to take part in the most popular activity from last year's event: train painting. Each child is given a wooden train car that they can decorate and then take home.

Stop by the Christmas Market for some shopping. Clay, photography, Christmas decor, glass, wood and paintings are among the items you can find at the marketing, starting at $1.25.

Also, the Michigan Transit Museum is decorated for the holidays and features a new ceramic street scene display – complete with an operating trolley car. Guests are welcome to check it out and tour the museum.

All ages are welcome to attend. Admission to these three locales is free, but donations are welcome.

See the Metro Parent listing for more on the 2011 Mount Clemens Family Christmas.
