Debbie Hudson

Where she works: North Oakland Family YMCA
Contact her: 248-370-9622
Years training: 5
Specialty: CrossFit, Olympic lifter, Level Two coach through USA weightlifting
Certification: American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), certified personal trainer, Level 1 CrossFit trainer
Fave equipment/exercise: Snatch-related movement or clean-and-jerk movements
Cost: Depends on the number of sessions, call for specifics
Approach: As a CrossFit trainer, Hudson uses this combination of metabolic conditioning and movements to help her clients reach their fitness goals. She designs workouts that tend to be shorter, say 10-25 minutes, but at a very high intensity. She often works with women over the age of 35 who are just getting interested in lifting weights. Lifting doesn't give you a beefed-up appearance, notes Hudson, who says her clients enjoy feeling stronger. Proof: At 117 pounds, Hudson, who competes in weightlifting, has heaved 150 pounds over her head!

Mike Jackson

Where he works: Lifetime Fitness Commerce Township
Contact him: 248-960-0955
Years training: 10
Specialty: General, strength and conditioning, clients ages 40-55 looking to get back in shape
Certification: National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM), Certified Personal Trainer (CPT), National Strength Coaching Association (NSCA), Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS), American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), Health Fitness Specialist (HFS)
Fave equipment/exercise: Clean and press. "It works your whole body," says Jackson.
Cost: $100 per session
Approach: "My philosophy is that exercising should be about functional training," explains Jackson. "Functional training is based on real life movements. Those are the movements that most apply to real life and what we do on a daily basis so I work with clients to develop those muscles. I don't use a lot of machines."

Diana Rose

Where she works: MFit Fitness Center at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube
Years training: 16
Specialty: Middle-aged overweight women, clients with special medical conditions
Certification: American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM)
Fave equipment/exercise: Medicine ball or fit ball. "They're so versatile," says Rose.
Cost: Around $50 an hour, call for specifics
Approach: "My style is to meet the client where they're at, and then learning how to push them in a safe way," says Rose. Her workout programs are tailored to individuals, not a one-size-fits-all approach. One reason clients work well with Rose? "I look like a real person. I'm really fit but not super ripped." She says clients who are just getting started trying to lose weight often worry about looking silly at the gym. Rose helps them get over that idea that they have to look a certain way to feel successful at the gym.

Nancy Seguin

Where she works: Macomb Family YMCA
Contact her: 586-468-1411
Years training: 6
Specialty: Fitness classes, pre- and post-natal fitness, seniors
Certification: Aerobic & Fitness Association of America (AFAA), World Instructor Training Schools (WITS)
Fave equipment/exercise: Push-ups. Says Seguin: "They're so good for you, they work your whole body."
Cost: Rates set by YMCA facility, call for more information
Approach: "My philosophy is that a client's best results come from motivation, consistency and intensity," Seguin says. She adds that a trainer's part is to help with each, along with pushing clients to their highest level. Seguin also brings personal experience, in addition to her professional credentials, to help clients get back into shape after having a baby (she's had two within the last few years!).

Jimi Varner

Where he works: The Sports Club of Novi
Contact him: 248-735-8850, ext. 233 or JimiVarner.com
Years training: 13
Specialty: fat-loss programming, strength training, teens
Certification: Certified personal trainer and certified lifestyle-weight management consultant through American Council on Exercise (ACE)
Fave equipment/exercise: "The medicine ball, because it's so versatile," Varner says.
Cost: $61 for one hour, group training sessions can also be arranged to lessen price
Approach: "My approach is really a hybrid-cross blend of a lot of different disciplines," says Varner, who has helped out on NBC's The Biggest Loser and is a featured trainer on MTV's I Used to be Fat. "I don't use a template or a cookie-cutter approach when it comes to clients. I try to find what's going to keep them motivated at the end of the day – keep them motivated to stay in the gym doing a program they don't mind adhering to – because then they're going to train more intensely."

Leah Veprauskas

Where she works: At clients' homes throughout Oakland County
Contact her: 248-760-9453
Years training: 12
Specialty: Group training, lifestyle management, private training
Certification: Certified Strength Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) through National Strength Conditioning Association (NSCA), certified personal trainer through National Council on Strength and Fitness (NCSF)
Fave equipment/exercise: Sandbells. These sand-filled neoprene discs are versatile and fun, explains Veprauskas. "Sandbells not only work your prime muscle movers, but your core and accessory muscles, too."
Cost: Ranges from $10 for in-group sessions to $75 for one-on one
Approach: "My typical clients fall into two groups," explains Verprauskas, "It's either those looking for group training on a regular basis or those focused on making lifestyle changes." Verprauskas points out that much of her time is spent talking to clients about how to achieve their goals and what challenges might be happening in their lives that might be holding them back. "My personal training sessions aren't just about exercise. It's about helping individuals learn how to take control of their lives."

One of my favorite personal trainers in Michigan is from Art of Strength. They have a really unique style that never gets boring and always keeps me on my toes. Everyone is really friendly, but they sure know how to keep me motivated and get my butt moving!
