With a background in triathlons (he doesn't do these anymore; he prefers distance running), Attard says he sometimes works with clients who are looking to compete. He also points out that working toward a competition can be just the kind of challenge that keeps clients motivated. He recalls training a 55-year-old woman who, during the course of training, not only lost 70 pounds but also successfully completed her first triathlon.

She tries to combine the latest in fitness trends along with high- and-low intensity workouts to boost her client's metabolism. For women, she aims to help them achieve a "soft, feminine look."

She designs workouts that tend to be shorter, say 10-25 minutes, but at a very high intensity. She often works with women over the age of 35 who are just getting interested in lifting weights. Lifting doesn't give you a beefed-up appearance, notes Hudson, who says her clients enjoy feeling stronger. Proof: At 117 pounds, Hudson, who competes in weightlifting, has heaved 150 pounds over her head!

She says clients who are just getting started trying to lose weight often worry about looking silly at the gym. Rose helps them get over that idea that they have to look a certain way to feel successful at the gym.

"I don't use a template or a cookie-cutter approach when it comes to clients. I try to find what's going to keep them motivated at the end of the day – keep them motivated to stay in the gym doing a program they don't mind adhering to – because then they're going to train more intensely."
