Winter Markt in Birmingham

At this third annual outdoor holiday market, enjoy the sights and smells of a traditional Christmas from Nov. 30-Dec. 2, 2012

Frohe Weihnachten! That's "Merry Christmas" in German and a phrase you may want to remember when you visit this year's Winter Markt in Birmingham. During the weekend of Nov. 30-Dec. 2, 2012, stop by and enjoy the atmosphere of this charming European-style holiday marketplace.

Bring the family and roam Birmingham's Shain Park during this third-annual event. For the whole weekend, the park is transformed into a bustling market of food, live music, unique handcrafted gifts, horse-drawn carriage rides and plenty more attractions for kids and adults.

This year will feature extended hours for the Kinderhaus children's activity center – where little ones can craft their own bookmarks, mittens, flowers, homemade greeting cards, snowflakes and puppets! Stop by the Baldwin Public Library on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. for some German fairytale storytelling, too.

To keep warm throughout the day, stop by one of the warming tents or pick up a cup of hot chocolate at Plum Market, where you'll find traditional German food and drinks.

More events include ice carving demonstrations, live reindeer, a visit from Detroit Lions mascot Roary on Saturday and, of course, kids can meet with the big guy in red at the Santa House. Keep an eye out for the Winter Princesses who will be making the rounds visiting kids.

Miss Michigan U.S.A., Jaclyn Schultz will be emceeing the opening ceremony at 5 p.m. on Friday and afterward, she will spend time at the Wilkommen Booth to greet visitors. Also, 104.3 WOMC will do a live broadcast with Bobby Mitchell and Stacey Duford on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The event will take place at the following times:

  • Friday, Nov. 20: 3-9 p.m.
  • Saturday, Dec. 1: 10 a.m.-9 p.m.
  • Sunday, Dec. 2: 11 a.m.-4 p.m.

Admission to Winter Markt is free and two hours free parking can be found nearby.
