ELF the New Broadway Musical at the Detroit Opera House
Fresh from the North Pole, Buddy the Elf visits southeast Michigan Dec. 3-15, 2013 to teach the meaning of Christmas in this Broadway spin on the popular film.
It's time for some laughs this holiday season. Remember the hilarious story of Elf in the 2003 film starring Will Ferrell? A decade later, the Broadway adaptation – starring the ever-chipper, Christmas-happy Buddy himself – is taking center in ELF: The New Broadway Musical, on stage at the Detroit Opera House Dec. 3-15, 2013.
Buddy is an orphaned boy who crawls into Santa's bag of gifts and is taken all the way to the North Pole. Due to his inevitable growth and less-than-exceptional toy-making abilities, Buddy learns the truth – and asks to be sent back home to find his birth father and true identity. In the process, he helps the people of the city remember what Christmas is.
The musical's Detroit stop also has a special evening just for families. On Wednesday, Dec. 4, the ELF Kids' Night happens at at 5:30 p.m., before the show, in the lobby. Activities include Arts & Scraps of Detroit, which brings supplies for kids to make their own holiday crafts, and free ice cream sample from Treat Dreams in Ferndale.
And the show itself is a pleaser! Featuring eye-popping costumes and sets paired with original songs by Tony Award nominees Matthew Sklar and Chad Beguelin, it's sure to have you and the kids singing along.
This modern-day holiday classic – declared "peppy" and "splashy" by the New York Times and "zippy" and "funny" by the New York Post – is the perfect family theater outing for the holiday season.
Show times are as follows:
- Tuesdays-Fridays: 7:30 p.m. (note: Thursday, Dec. 5, is a signed performance)
- Saturdays: 2 and 7:30 p.m.
- Sundays: 1 and 6:30 p.m.
Tickets for ELF range $24-$72 and are on sale at all Ticketmaster locations, as well as the Fisher Theatre and Detroit Opera House box offices.
