PYC Junior Sailing offers youth sailing instruction for beginners through advanced racers. It is taught on PYC supplied sailboats on Cass Lake by U.S. Sailing Association certified instructors. The program is appropriate for kids and teens from 8 years old through 17.
Classes are 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday through Friday. Kids learn how to sail in one-person and two-person boats. Upon completion of the Learn to Sail class, students have confidence in their boat handling ability, develop an understanding of sailing, and build their desire for the sport. Upon completion of the Intermediate or Advanced class, kids are ready to compete in sailing regattas for kids. The PYC Junior Racing Team is an eight-week program specifically for preparation and participation at weekly sailing regattas held at PYC and other clubs in metro Detroit.
In addition to sailing skills, the camp objectives are for the kids to have fun and interact with other kids with similar interests. The environment is a private yacht club on Cass Lake with a sandy beach and safety is of primary concern. Kids bring their own lunch daily and are expected to be dropped off and picked up on time. There are no services available for early or late departures outside the regular schedule. Our students typically return every summer!
The program consists of the following schedule for camps:
• Learn To Sail – a two week beginner session. Four classes: June 17, July 8 and 22, Aug. 5. • Intermediate and Advanced sessions begin weekly between June 17 and Aug. 12. • PYC Jr. Racing Team runs June 17-Aug. 16.
