Matthaei Botanical Gardens & Nichols Arboretum features hundreds of acres of trails, natural areas, displays, and formal gardens, free and open seven days a week from dawn to dusk. It also features a free year-round children’s garden, a three-climate conservatory with tropical, temperate, and arid houses, in addition to kids and adult ed programs, drop-in activities, school tours, volunteer opportunities, special sales and events, a gift shop and more. All in beautiful, restorative, family-friendly natural settings that offer a chance for respite and relaxation.
In the Gaffield Children’s Garden at Matthaei, kids can create secret spaces, make music, look for hidden treasures in the digging pit, learn about how plants grow or hitch a ride on a giant turtle.
Our interactive exhibits throughout the year offer kids the opportunity to discover, learn, and play. Children can learn about cooking, plant seedlings, create holiday crafts and more.
At Matthaei, we love winter as much as summer. During our Wild Wonderful Winter conservatory display last year, kids participated in activities such as making snowflakes from paper, winter hikes and a celebration of the solstice.
