Livingston County Reading Path Provides Outlet for Physical Activity and Reading

Flex your muscles and your reading chops on the Livingston County Reading Path, which launched this month at Settlers Park in Hartland.

Women United, a chapter of the Livingston County United Way, has launched an initiative that exercises both the body and mind – Reading Path.

The Livingston County Reading Path, which combines physical activity and reading, travels to different parks and community areas throughout Livingston County and is the brainchild of the Women United Committee.

When surveyed in fall 2019, the group determined they wanted to focus their efforts on two areas members feel passionate about: physical activity and reading. The initiative was created as a way to effectively support and implement activity and reading into the community.

The first Reading Path kicked off this month at Settlers Park. Pages from the children’s book Grady the Goose, written by Denise Brennan-Nelson, were professionally printed and installed on signs along an outdoor path at Settlers Park.

Visitors will have the opportunity to learn and enjoy reading the story outdoors, which engaging in exercise. As viewers walk the trail, they will be guided to participate in physical activities and imaginary play, as well as learn fun facts as they read each sign.

At the end of the story, participants are invited to complete a short survey and enter for a chance to win a free children’s book. Their names will also be added to a running list to lcunitedway.org, in commemoration of completing the trail.

The Women United committee has a goal of collecting data from the current project, which will help shape future trails.

The Reading Path welcomes all interested participants, of any age or fitness level, to the reading trail at Settlers Park located at 2665 Clark Road, Hartland.
