Becoming Michigan Exhibit at Lorenzo Cultural Center

Visit Clinton Township Feb. 25-May 5, 2012, to examine the Mitten State 'from Revolution to Statehood' – and enjoy special family programs

Way back before the auto industry, fur trade was hot in metro Detroit. And forget the economy: Local folks were more worried about war with Native Americans. Welcome to the Great Lakes State – pre-1837.

That's where you and your family will be transported in Becoming Michigan: From Revolution to Statehood, a new exhibit at the Lorenzo Cultural Center running Feb. 25-May 5, 2012. This Macomb County spot showcases photos, timelines, artifacts and more – all of which illustrate key people, places and events that led to Michigan's statehood in January 1837.

And, lucky for parents and kids, 25 free family experiences add interactive zip to the artifacts. From storytelling to music and dance presentations, the Clinton Township center promises a host of entertaining and educational events. Just be sure to pre-register!

In particular? Watch for It's Maple Syrup Time: Stories, Songs and Dances of Old Michigan. Happening at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 24, storyteller Genot Picor from Clinton Township brings local stories and legends – relating to maple-syrup making – to life through song and dance. Or try Journey to Paradise (Michigan!) on the Erie Canal on April 20. Here, catch a reenactment with historical re-enactor Michael P. Deren. He combines music with facts about the Erie Canal's role in the early settlement of Michigan.

These are just a couple of the family-oriented events the center offers during the exhibit's duration.

While you're visiting, also be sure to check out the Great Lakes Native Quilting exhibit, which showcases 16 different quilts, photos of quilters and quilting activities – and four settings that demonstrate the use of quilts in Great Lakes Native communities.

The Lorenzo Cultural Center is open 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Wednesdays-Saturdays and 1-4 p.m. on Sundays.
