Best Black History Month Family Events in Southeast Michigan

Parents and kids can celebrate in Macomb, Oakland, Washtenaw and Wayne counties with special exhibits, plays, library programs and more

Families can commemorate Black History Month 2013 by visiting some of their favorite museums, venues and theaters. Throughout the month of February, there will be an abundance of establishments in southeast Michigan that will offer historical, informational and artistic events that highlight black history. Black History Month at the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn

In the spirit of this year's Black History Month theme, Journey and Legacy, the Henry Ford will be celebrating the heritage of African Americans who changed the world through multiple special performances. Each performance will celebrate specific eras in black history: Pre-Emancipation (Feb. 2-3), Northern Migration (Feb. 9-10), Civil Rights Movement (Feb. 16-17) and Contemporary Times (Feb. 23-24).

African American History Day at Detroit Historical Museum

Looking for a fun day that won't cost you anything? The Detroit Historical Museum will be launching Black History Month with its annual free event: African American History Day. Become captivated by the stories of caricature artist and well-known storyteller Ivory D. Williams, or wander through the Artists Market within the museum to look for keepsakes for the family. Regardless, you're bound to walk away from this day with memories in tow.

A rap-infused puppet performance? Sign us up! This updated version of the African folktale about a spider comes to the stage again. After the show, kids can make their very own puppet.
