Fire & Ice Festival in Downtown Rochester

Winter family fun including tube sledding, fireworks, ice skating, sculptures and even food trucks are in store for parents and kids Jan. 24-26, 2014

So far this winter, we've weathered a couple "polar vortexes" in southeast Michigan. Now, Rochester is inviting you and the kids to bundle up, brave the chill – and get the heck out there to celebrate the snow at the Fire & Ice Festival, returning to its downtown area Friday-Sunday, Jan. 24-26, 2014.

This year's event offers a couple new options. Think food trucks are just for summer fests? You're in for a cool surprise. Five tasty options peddle pretzels, hot dogs, Mexican grub and more. Find the trucks 5-9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Also on those two days, hop aboard a carriage ride. This old-fashioned option departs from East Fourth and Main streets, running 6-9 p.m.

Love fireworks? A favorite two-night display ignites the cold skies at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Check out the ice-sculpture carving action those same days. You can catch demonstrations 6-8 p.m. Friday and noon-2 p.m. and 4-6 p.m. Saturday.

Several events happen all three days, including open ice skating (bring your own skates), a tube sledding run and face painting. Visit any day to also check out the "Modes of Transportation Ice Sculpture Show," where you can stroll and admire the icy art – or see the town's shops sparkle with holiday lights one more time as The Big Bright Light Show powers back up. And, if you're still hungry, visit the TasteFest for local chow (and a beer tent option for the grownups).

At select times, also watch for dog-sled demos and rides, a broomball demonstration, pancake breakfast – and new The Brooksie Way's Chill at the Mill 5K, happening at 9 a.m. Sunday.

Overall event times are as follows:

  • Friday, Jan. 24: 5-9 p.m.
  • Saturday, Jan. 25: 10 a.m.-9 p.m.
  • Sunday, Jan. 26: 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

General admission is free, though costs for food and certain activities may apply.
