Motown Winter Blast in Detroit

Campus Martius Park keeps it cool Feb. 10-12, 2012, with this annual family festival featuring food, music, skating and more

The Motown Winter Blast in Detroit is getting a new look. Thanks to Amy Wolfe of Harper Woods, the event has a brand new logo. Wolfe is the winner of the first ever Motown Winter Blast Logo Design Contest, which was hosted by Marketing Associates. The company tapped into the creative community in metro Detroit, and Wolfe's creation beat out 77 other candidates – winning tons of cool prizes and props for her originality.

Back for an eighth year, the Motown Winter Blast, taking place Feb. 10-12, 2012, offers all the expected family favorites. The event, which welcomes 65,000 people each year, started in 2005 as the kick-off to the city's yearlong celebration leading up to Super Bowl XL. Since then, it has become a metro Detroit must for families and people of all ages.

Free ice skating (thanks to Charter One Bank), elaborate ice sculptures, a winter carnival, snowshoeing and dog sledding exhibitions are just the beginning of the festivities. Pro and amateur skaters will wow the crowds with their fancy footwork on the ice during skating exhibitions.

More than 40 local musicians – from country to rock to blues – take one of three stages for shows all weekend long. Plus Radio Disney spins the latest tunes for kids from noon to 3 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

Rosco the Clown and ventriloquist Vikkie Gasko-Green are among the kids entertainment acts, which also includes an advanced screening of Disney XD's Lab Rats.

New this year: Donate a book and help the General Motors Foundation encourage literacy through its Reading is a Blast program. Former Pistons Rick Mahorn and Rasheed Wallace are among the local celebs that will take the stage to read children's books to the crowds.

Hungry? Snack on s'mores at the marshmallow roasting station or get a Taste of Detroit. Local eateries including Hudson Cafe, Detroit Seafood Market and Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory will be passing out food to patrons.

If you're thinking this event is too kid-friendly – think again. The 21 and over crowd can hit up an after party at Greektown Casino on Friday or for $5 take part in the "Snow-Torius" pub crawl during the Bar Blast Tour on Saturday. And if you want to spend a night in the city, the Westin Book Cadillac is even offering special rates for the weekend.

Bring a children's book or can of food to donate to Matrix Human Services, or pay $1 admission to this event. Times are as follows:

  • Friday, Feb. 10: 11 a.m.-11 p.m.
  • Saturday, Feb. 11: 11 a.m.-11 p.m.
  • Sunday, Feb. 12: 11 a.m.-9 p.m.
