Take your little hockey player or figure skater to the annual Motown Winter Blast at Campus Martius Park in Detroit, Feb. 8-10, 2013, where they can show off their skills at this cool winter festival.
This year's line-up brings loads of new opportunities for fun – not to mention that the youngsters can skate for free this weekend thanks to the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and Blue Care Network! And, the first 250 people who show up during this event will receive free skate rentals, so make sure to get there early. Note: Regular rental fees are $3.
Winter Blast has also teamed up with the Detroit Red Wings and Olympia Entertainment this year to bring kids and parents hockey-themed entertainment and a pair of interactive hockey games where fans can win prizes. Put your hockey skills to the ultimate test by participating in this year's Hockey Shot competition, presented by Great Expressions Dental Centers. If you're the grand prize winner, you can choose among three prizes: a free set of braces or a dental care package from GEDC, two tickets to an upcoming Red Wings game or a weekend in Detroit, courtesy of the Westin Brook Cadillac Hotel.
Do you have a little one that's not very interested in skating or hockey? No worries, this year's Winter Blast festival will give youngsters of all ages the opportunity to unleash their inner mad scientist. Running every 90 minutes, children can be blown away by different scientific demonstrations that will include everything from foggy dry ice storm to gravity-defying beach balls to Mad Science burp-flavored potion. Shows will start at 5 p.m. on Friday and at noon Saturday and Sunday.
Make a pit stop at the unveiling of the Girl Scouts of Southeastern Michigan Cookie Van, where you can load up on all of thin mints and samoas that you'll need. You could also win a chance to receive a free year of Girl Scout cookies.
