Panera Bread Bakers in Training Program Teaches Southeast Michigan Kids Kitchen Basics

Children enjoy a 'B.I.T' of baking and cooking fun with this class that's offered at various cafe locations in the metro Detroit region

Hey, mom and dad. If you've got a mini Guy Fieri or Giada De Laurentiis glued to your kitchen oven, these's a hot program in town to sate their appetitive. The Panera Bread B.I.T. Kids – that stands for "Bakers in Training" – is designed to offer an introductory culinary experience to children and tweens ages 5-12.

Think of it as an awesome menu item you can't believe you never noticed before – tucked into one of your favorite local chains for sandwiches, soups, salads, coffee and the like. For starters, you'll have to roundup a group of 10 or more. Then, you'll need to book a weekday slot. B.I.T. is available to start between 2 and 4:30 p.m. Mondays-Fridays.

At the class, gets will get the behind-the-scenes 411 on kitchen safety, proper food handling and prep at one of Panera's cafe-bakery locales. Then, they'll get their hands dirty. Each junior chef dons a baking hat and apron while learning the fundamentals of baking their own loaf of bread! It all happens in the course of an hour-and-a-half event.

It's a prime way to give your kids a taste of some cooking basics – not to mention, see what goes into running a real food-service spot. Who knows; it could lay the groundwork for a future career!

Ready for a B.I.T. of fun with the kids? Classes are $8/child. One chaperone is required per every five kids. You can register online – and learn a bit more – at the Panera Bread B.I.T. Kids website.
