Michigan Winter Dog Classic at Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi

Families (and their dogs!) have fun Jan. 16-19, 2014 at the state's largest dog show, featuring agility, lots of breeds to meet, demos and more.

Get ready for four days full of fun for the family (and Fido, too!). The Michigan Winter Dog Classic returns Jan. 16-19, 2014 to the Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi – and it promises to get tails wagging all around.

At this year's event, hosted by Oakland County Kennel Club and Livonia Kennel Club, families can check out more than 7,000 dogs. With upwards of 160 breeds appearing throughout the event, you're sure to see one of your favorites in the All-Breed Dog Shows, happening all four days.

Prepare to be entertained! You'll see pups doing all sorts of neat things, from duck herding to agility and pulling weight.

But don't let those dogs have all the fun. See how agile your family friend is at "My Dog Can Do That!" with the American Kennel Club 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Dogs must be 6 months old, and owners must bring proof of rabies vaccine, a buckle collar and 4- to 6-foot leash. You can get the full list of requirements on the event website (find that in the Metro Parent calendar listing). Or have your dog's manners tested with the AKC Canine Good Citizen test 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

You can expect to learn a lot about canines here, too. Organizers say one of the reasons to come to the show is to learn. Talk with experts, ask them questions and learn about buying purebreds, training dogs and caring for them. There will even be health clinics to swing by Friday, Saturday and Sunday for eye certification exams, OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals) cardiac exams and more.

Be sure to take a break to check out the vendors while you're here. Browse booths and shop for everything from treats to clothing (for you and your dog).

Tickets to the Michigan Winter Dog Classic are $35/two adults and three kids – or $10/adults, $8/ages 7-12 and free/6 and under. Dates and times are as follows:

  • Thursday, Jan. 16: 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
  • Friday, Jan. 17-Sunday, Jan. 19: 7:30 a.m.-5 p.m.
