Wild Winter Weekends at the Detroit Zoo in Royal Oak

Journey to the arctic, take an African adventure and head on a snowy safari at this annual family event, happening select weekends Jan. 11-March 9, 2014

Winter temperatures and some snowfall might deter you from visiting places like the Detroit Zoo. But don't let the cold slow you down – because there's tons of wintertime fun in store during Wild Winter Weekends in Royal Oak, select weekends Jan. 11-March 9, 2014. (Update the old URL, but add specific links to each month's event where noted.)

Bundle up and head to this Oakland County spot for three weekends of activities that are free with zoo admission, which is $14 for adults (ages 15-61), $10 for ages 2-14 and free for kids under age 2. Planning to bring grandma and grandpa? Seniors ages 62-plus also pay $10 for admission. The events take place from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. on select Saturdays and Sundays.

Wild Winter Arctic Adventure

Jan. 11-12, 2014

Kick off January by embracing the cold with arts and crafts with a wintertime theme, plus the chance to see ice carving demonstrations live. Catch live performances and chat with a zookeeper to learn all about the arctic animals at the Detroit Zoo.

Wild Winter African Adventure

Feb. 8-9, 2014

Since February is Black History Month, celebrate with two days of fun – including an African drum lesson, arts and crafts, games and more. Plus, the zoo's education specialist David Gakure – who is also a Kenyan naturalist – will share special stories with kids and parents.

Wild Winter Safari Social

March 8-9

Instead of embracing the cold, it's time to warm up with the safari social. Sip on hot chocolate – or channel summertime with some ice cream. Go on a scavenger hunt, get your face painted, do some arts and crafts and of course, chat with zookeepers.
