Metro Parent's 2010 Mom-Approved Docs

Local parents choose the top pediatricians, kids' dentist and other family doctors in southeastern Michigan. See who made the list – and read comments from local moms and dads!

In 2010, for the first time, Metro Parent asked readers to nominate their favorite kids' doctors in southeastern Michigan. Here are the fine physicians that got props from moms like you to be considered Metro Parent's Mom-Approved Docs.

Salma Aftab, M.D.

19930 Farmington Road, Suite C, Livonia
"Dr. Aftab is a one of these few rare hometown doctors. When you go to her office, there is no wait to be seen. When she examines your child, she is willing to give you all the time that you need to ask questions and feel comfortable. She provides you with her cell phone number after hours. She works evenings and Saturdays to accommodate working parents' schedules. She continues to provide care even when patients lose their insurances (which happens a lot these days!). She even makes house calls for emergencies. She is a pediatrician that truly loves children and is dedicated to taking care of families, sometimes for generations. She is also open to alternative types of medications if that is what the patient wants to pursue, such as homeopathic medicines."
- Bushra, West Bloomfield

Srinivas Baliga, M.D.

18424 Farmington Road, Livonia
Dr. Baliga is an excellent doctor and is compassionate and caring. He is board certified and is very competent.

"Dr. Crystal Banks is the primary care physician for both our 2-year-old toddler and our 5- month-old infant. She is a true physician. She does not only concentrate on identifying physical symptoms and prescribing manufactured remedies. Dr. Banks concentrates on the total wellbeing of the child - both physically and emotionally. Her caring nature is exhibited through her serenity with her patients, the amount of time she spends educating parents, and her efforts to foster a nurturing and strong family unit. The staff at her office, My Kids Doc in Southfield, displays the same compassionate efforts and behavior. My wife and I are very pleased with her as our children's pediatrician."
- Ian, Southfield

Beth Barclay, M.D.

3200 W. Liberty Road, Suite A, Ann Arbor

My daughter likes coming to his office and thinks he's funny. She has psoriasis and he has been open to trying different things and is not hesitant to have her see a specialist. I don't have to wait months for an appointment and they offer a same day visit for emergencies. He's been doing this for a long time and really knows his stuff!"
- Jarene, Farmington Hills

Jennifer Becker, M.D.

990 W. Ann Arbor Trail, Suite 210, Plymouth
"Dr. Becker always calls back with lab/test results herself. They give wonderful explanations and answer questions and have no problem with constant phone calls from worried parents. They are the best pediatricians in the Michigan and I would recommend this practice to anyone with children."

Talks to my kids, interacts with each of them, remembers what they are interested in and is really a nice person in addition to being very skilled in his field of dentistry. He is also very gentle and helped my daughter overcome her fear of dentists, as she had a very bad experience with a couple of other dentists. She just loves Dr. Raffi"
- Mary, Troy

Steve Bennett, O.D.

2000 Green Road, Suite 200, Ann Arbor

"Words can not possibly convey how much our family loves and appreciates Dr. Parikah. She is gentle and caring. She knows and remembers personal facts and events about our kids likes, dislikes and hobbies. It is easy to see her sincere love for children not only as patients, but as individuals. She always is warm and welcoming and gives every child a hug. She patiently answers all questions or concerns. She never rushes. One time our youngest daughter had to be transported to the hospital by ambulance from Dr. Parikh's office when she only 2 weeks old. She was calm and reassuring as she led us through that terrifying situation. Her care did not stop at the office. She called the ER at the hospital to check on us and explain what was happening. She even checked to make sure that our oldest daughter had a ride home from school since we had been sent off in an emergency. How many doctors do that? I know that we have found a gem in Dr. Parikh. If everyone loved their jobs as much as she does, the world would be a much happier place."

Cathy, Southgate

Andrew Dettore, D.O.

23050 West Road, Suite 110, Brownstown Township
"Dr. Dettore is our favorite pediatrician. I was 17 when at my 19 weeks pregnant ultrasound, we found out that our baby had Tetralogy of Fallot. We had already decided that Dr. Dettore was going to be our pediatrician, and he sat on the phone with me for more than two hours trying to help me understand the baby's diagnosis, and understand how his repair surgery would go. He then took fabulous care of Kolton - both just after birth leading to up to his surgery, and after his surgery. Dr. Dettore was the doctor who took me from being completely scared and unprepared, to being completely confident and knowledgeable on this diagnosis. He had previous experience with a Tet baby that many pediatricians did not have, and made the first year of Kolton's life go smoothly. We unfortunately had to move and couldn't take Dr. Dettore with us! No pediatrician will ever compare! Kolton and I miss Dr. Dettore, and his office very much! Fabulous group of people over there!"
Kaitlyn, Riverview

Pamela Dickieson, D.D.S.

22615 Michigan Ave., Dearborn
"Dr. Dickieson has been our family's dentist for 20 years. She has cared for our two sons since they have been 2 years old! They are now 16 and 20 years old. She is always kind and highly qualified in all aspects of her care. She has come in on her day off and on weekends if we had an immediate problem. From providing wonderful dental care, extracting teeth with gentle hands, to making cool mouthguards for my hockey players, she is top notch! She is service first in all ways. Our family would like to nominate her for this title that she is well worthy of. Thank you for this wonderful opportunity to nominate Dr. Dickieson."
- Consuelo, Dearborn

Jay Eastman, M.D.

2055 14 Mile Road, Birmingham
"Dr. Eastman and all the staff have always been very accommodating when we needed to see a doctor quickly. I love how the waiting room is divided - one side for the really sick children and the other for the not-so-sick. The division is carefully made, so that no one feels they are being quarantined but everyone feels safe at the same time. The wait times have never been long for us. And there is a book exchange for the kids - leave a book, take a book. Plus, Dr. Eastman treats my kids with kindness and care."
- Vina, Birmingham

- Melissa, Garden City

Helen Etemadi, D.O.

14700 King Road, Suite C, Riverview
Obstetrics and Gynecology
"Dr. Edemati is a great doctor and person. She took me in as a new patient when I had a devastating diagnosis of infertility from a previous OB/GYN. I was seeking other options. She was able to look into my symptoms and suggested a diagnosis of PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome). It was great to hear this, yet a bummer because I did not want anything to be wrong. But in the end, I had great news as well! At a follow up appointment the next week, I had an ultrasound and found out I was five weeks pregnant! I am now 36 weeks pregnant and glad I chose to have Dr. Edemati as my OB/GYN. She has made my first pregnancy a breeze, has always listened to my concerns and has made this pregnancy a great experience!"

Josephine Finazzo, D.D.S.

12947 Northline Road, Southgate
Pediatric Dentistry
"My two kids have seen Dr. Finazzo as their pediatric dentist since they were both 3 years old (they are now 13 and 9). She is our favorite for so many reasons: Her level of expertise is bar none, the calm way she has with the kids. She somehow gets them to do exactly what she needs them to do without making them hesitant or afraid. Never ONCE have my kids said, 'I don't wanna go to the dentist.' She explains things well to the parent, never makes you feel rushed if you have any questions. And I don't think in all the years I have taken my kids to her, she hasn't been smiling and happy. She exudes happiness because she loves what she does every day. She enjoys the kids, and they love her. I recommend her every chance I get!"

My 3-1/2-year-old asks to go to the doctor all the time - she loves him that much! We have never had to wait more than a few hours to see him. "Dr. Golnick is a one-of-a-kind dentist. It shows through his character and demeanor that he loves what he does. He is always happy and takes the time to have a conversation with not only the parents but the children, as well. My son has no anxiety about going to the dentist. While doing a procedure on my son, Dr. Golnick told him, 'I will count to 10 and then I will give you a break.' Dr. Golnick began counting and my son became anxious, but right at the number 10, Dr. Golnick stopped. I was so happy that he kept his word. That simple act built trust between him and my son. Now my son says, 'If it hurts, I know Dr. Golnick will stop if I tell him to.'"
- Mariea, Warren

Robert Goodman, D.D.S.

42430 W. 12 Mile Road, Suite 101, Novi

- Sara, Farmington Hills

Sindy Goodman, D.D.S.

42430 W. 12 Mile Road, Suite 101, Novi
"Dr. Goodman is a great orthodontist! Every visit, our family feels so welcome from the time we come in to when we check out. The doctors and assistants always ask what's new at school, how our team is doing if we have a game or how was our part in a school play. They understand if a child is a little afraid, not knowing if braces will hurt, but they talk and smile the whole time - and picking colors for the braces is so much fun. They have contests like the favorite pet contest and they give rewards for good brushing every month. They really care about every patient and are the tops in their field!"
- Mary, Northville

- Safaa, Dearborn

Kevin Kutskill, M.D.

35054 23 Mile Road, New Baltimore
"I really appreciate Dr. Kutskill because he's a down to earth, family man who makes my children feel comfortable and taken care of. I've heard a lot of people talk about their pediatrician and how they make them do this, that or the other thing, or how they're nervous to give their child a pacifier or put them in a bouncer because their pediatrician is so against it. As a man who has children, Dr. Kutskill understands what is really important in keeping your kids safe and healthy and what's optional. He has always had common sense answers to my questions and made me feel more confident as a parent. I don't need a fancy office or the latest toys in the waiting room, but I do want a doctor who is calm and confident with my children and one who is respectful of my opinions, while at the same time helping me to be a better parent and keep my kids healthy."
- Kara, Harper Woods

With her witty and kid-friendly personality, I can honestly say I don't know what I would do without her."

"He is most patient and kind. Never rushes you, always willing to listen. Although his practice is busy, you can always get into be seen in a pinch - if not by him, then by one of his associates (all seem good so far). This doctor listens to the kids and the parents without making the parent feel like they are nuts or that you are a pain. He is extremely knowledgeable and will pull up a chair, sit down and explain everything eye to eye with my kids and myself and does not leave until we have no further questions. They should all be this good."
- Gayle, Sterling Heights

Ami Mavani, M.D.

101 S. Rochdale Drive, Suite B, Rochester Hills
"Dr. Mavani is so caring and knowledgeable. She remembers and genuinely cares about our three children. I personally love the fact that she's part of the holistic community and doesn't immediately prescribe a drug to treat an illness that can be treated in a more natural way. Her office is kid-friendly, with a sick and a well waiting area, and her staff are just as concerned for our care as she is. She is personally available to parents who have worries and reassures our new-parent jitters."
- Marie, Washington Township

7010 Pontiac Trail, Suite B, West Bloomfield

- Thomas, Allen Park

Scott Moore, M.D.

13699 Old U.S. 12, Chelsea
"We've been with Dr. Moore for about 10 years. He treats our three children, one has autism and other special needs. He really goes the extra mile every single time. He calls us when he's concerned about something that a test reveals, he takes action and refers us to specialists when we bring our concerns to him (instead of blowing us off like so many other doctors do), and he's generally just a very personable, compassionate human being. You can tell that he really genuinely cares. I wish that more doctors had a bedside manner like Dr. Moore."

- Heather, Clarkston

Molly O'Shea, M.D.

3270 W. Big Beaver Road, Suite 400, Troy
"Dr. Molly is absolutely amazing! Her office is inviting and comfortable with couches, books and TVs in every exam room rather than tall exam tables that I have to keep my kids from climbing on and uncomfortable plastic chairs for the parents. But this is just the icing on the cake. Dr. Molly goes above and beyond every day. She (or her associate, the also wonderful Dr. Stacey) is available by email at all hours of the day and night. We have emailed pictures of rashes to know whether we need to come in, she asked us to email her every day when one of our daughters started a new medication, so should would know how it was affecting her and adjust the medication accordingly. Dr. Molly is patient no matter what our questions are or how many we have. She treats the kids with respect and asks them questions about how they are feeling. I think I knew that she would always be our pediatrician when one of our daughters was having difficulty with daytime potty accidents. She got down on her knees and looked our daughter in the eye and talked about how she was feeling, how she was growing and taking responsibility for herself. In that moment with my 4-year-old, I knew I would be able to trust Dr. Molly with all of the exciting and challenging developmental milestones ahead. I knew she would talk openly and honestly with our daughters and answer whatever questions I may not be able to. Dr. Molly is genuinely interested in getting to know our family and being part of our team as the girls grow."

- Elizabeth, Auburn Hills

"Dr. Papa takes time for the little patients in his life and chats it up with them. My son Aidan absolutely adores him and Marie and loves going to see ALL of them."

- Rachel, Trenton

Renee Paye, M.D.

8545 Common Road, Suite 200, Warren
"I have a 20-month-old son. While I was pregnant with him, my husband and I agreed that we would choose a young male doctor for our son. My doctor had recommended a doctor from Dr. Paye's office, but when the time came for my son to be born, Dr. Paye just so happened to be the one on call for the night. We fell in love with her that day and decided she would be the one for our son. This office make you feel like they actually care, they listen and inform you without making you feel rushed, which is so important especially for new parents. They have often called after appointments to check in on my son, which I feel shows that they care also. Dr. Paye is the best!"
- Athena, Roseville

Varisa Perlman, M.D.

3850 Pelham Road, Suite 9, Dearborn
"Dr. Perlman is such a great pediatrician. She is very good with my kids. She also listens to the parent when they feel something is not quite right with their child. What a great attitude and personality Dr. Perlman has with her patients and their parents.

"After I had my daughter in 2001, I had no clue about a doctor for her until Dr. Popovic walked through my hospital room door. From that moment on, Dr. Popovic has been my daughter's pediatrician. She is also my 11-month-old son's doctor now. Dr. Popovic is very gentle, sincere, has empathy and is very much to the point. She cares for each and every one of her patients like they are her own kids. No matter where I am located, she will continue to care for my children until they pass the age of no longer needing her care. My daughter loves going to see Dr. Popovic and brings her pictures she has done in art class. Every year we bring her an updated picture of the kids and they get hung up on her wall. We love Dr. Popovic!"
- Jennifer, Sterling Heights

Rick Poston, D.O.

22995 Hall Road, Trenton
"Dr. Poston is one of the best because he takes his time to talk to the kids and the parents, so they all know what is going on. He is not in a rush and is very thorough. Dr. Poston always has a way of making kids comfortable. I have been taking my kids to see Dr. Poston for about nine years. My oldest son was anemic and was taking iron when we first went to Dr. Poston, no one before that found out why. Dr. Poston just took some simple blood work and determined that it is a chronic condition and that the iron supplement wouldn't help. He is very personable and takes his time with each individual to ensure they have the best care!"
- Renee, Taylor

"We have been afflicted with a few uncommon illnesses/conditions that Dr. Rosen recognized and diagnosed accurately and immediately. His prescribed treatment has always been simple, effective and non-stressful for parents and kids. Dr. Rosen thinks outside the box - often suggesting alternatives to traditional prescription medications. He gains children's trust and develops an understanding with his patients very quickly. If you were to ask my kids why they like Dr. Rosen, it would be because "he's funny." He does enjoy entertaining the kids while he's diagnosing symptoms, thereby distracting them and eliminating any anxiety. He's wonderful."

- Ashley, Ferndale

Thomas Schnur, M.D.

1349 S. Rochester Road, Rochester
"Dr. Schnur has been our pediatrician since 1994. My two boys have always received exceptional care, but I didn't fully realize what an exceptional doctor Dr. Schnur is until tragedy hit our family in 2008. My oldest son, then 14, suffered a traumatic brain injury following a snow tubing accident. After a week in the NICU, multiple surgeries and another week on a regular floor, I brought him home with 68 staples across his head. Our first time out of the house was to see Dr. Schnur and have the staples removed. As I knelt in front of my son and held his hand (or more accurately he held mine), Dr. Schnur gently and patiently removed each staple. I can still hear the clink as the staples hit a metal pan and Dr. Schnur's reassuring tone. Now 21/2 years later my son has made a miraculous recovery. There are still bumps in the road and Dr. Schnur and staff are still reassuring us. His staff, especially the referral specialist Diane, have never failed us in getting the right information to the right people, so that the countless specialist appointments and tests are covered by our insurance. I have called her more than once while we were on our way to an appointment and she always replies, "Don't worry and don't apologize. I'll take care of it right away" - and she does. His nurse Marie takes my sobbing phone calls, hugs me when she sees me and in every interaction reassures me. And Dr. Schnur has been the cornerstone of my son's recovery - answering countless questions and guiding us in all of my son's medical decisions. These things may seem trivial, but when you're faced with a really BIG thing, it is the little things that wear away your fears and give you hope. Just a week or so ago, Dr. Schnur said to my son "Hang in there, Buddy. It won't be long before this is all behind you."
- Jennifer, Oakland Township

Paula Schreck, M.D.

46591 Romeo Plank Road, Macomb

She is very thorough and always addresses any concerns I may have regarding my child. She gives him the best care. She is absolutely great."
- Felicia, Detroit

Andrew Seilier, M.D.

3200 W. Liberty St., Suite A, Ann Arbor
"Wow! Words can't explain the knowledge, patience and understanding this group has. They are wonderful and so caring to each and every family. Our doctors helped us with breast feeding, allergies, night terrors, asthma, breaking bad bedtime habits, and keeping our kids healthy inside and out. They always take the time to listen. These days that is huge; so many times people don't listen. At Liberty Pediatrics, we feel like family and know we are getting the best!"
- Heather, Ann Arbor

- Crystal, Ferndale

Steven Shuster, D.D.S.

16338 Middlebelt Road, Livonia
"Dr. Shuster is the best. He gave me my first painless anesthetic shot and made one minor adjustment to my front tooth and I am finally pain free! So far, my son has not needed any dental work other than cleanings, which brings me to one of his dental hygienists, Mara. She is the greatest. She takes so much time explaining each procedure, from X-rays to flossing. My son has a hard time getting X-rays, so she keeps practicing with him and has even given him exercises to get him ready for his next visit. I would recommend them to everyone."
- Dawn, Livonia

He's everything you want your kids' doctor to be: kind, gentle, understanding, a good listener and has a great sense of humor. He has the kids giggling within seconds of entering the room. Plus, he takes his time with you. You never feel like he's rushing you out to get to his next patient. He makes you think of an old-fashioned family doctor, but with all the modern technology and current knowledge a doctor should have. My kids never dread or complain about having to go see Dr. Taylor."
- Amy, Plymouth

David Wartel, Ph.D.

6346 Orchard Lake Road, Suite 107, West Bloomfield
"Dr. Wartel has worked with our family for the past six years. I have 15-year-old twin sons on the autism spectrum. If it weren't for Dr. Wartel's therapy, my sons would not have been able to fully mainstream. Today they are doing wonderful in high school and both are on the honor roll. His specialty is behavioral therapy. Dr. Wartel is a no-nonsense individual with a practical approach. It works!"

Center for Exceptional Families, Oakwood Family Center
18501 Rotunda Drive, Suite 200, Dearborn
Pediatrics, Physical Medicine, Pediatric Rehabilitation
"My daughter Jessi, who is 2 years old, has a developmental delay. She sees Dr. Youngs and the therapists at the Center for Exceptional Families. Dr. Youngs takes so much time, even though she is very busy. She has taken every measure to find my daughter a diagnosis, although one has not been found yet. She has cried with me about my daughter because she loves all of the children that she works with. She has given me hugs at appointments. She always asks how my husband and I are doing with everything. You can feel her compassion with every appointment. When my daughter has made good progress, Dr. Youngs is truly happy. I feel that her No. 1 priority is to make sure all of her kids with special needs and their families are taken care of!"

Robert Zurack, D.O.

19020 Fort St., Wyandotte
"Dr. Zurack has been our family's pediatrician for eight years ... not to mention he was my doctor 25+ years ago! I have four children, ages 8, 5, 2 and 1. Dr. Zurack has been nothing but caring, compassionate, full of knowledge and great with the kids! Our fourth child who just turned 1 was diagnosed with a rare genetic condition just two days after birth. Dr. Zurack was there for us emotionally and gave us such hope and encouragement that day in his office. I will never forget the empathy I felt from him, something I did not receive from the doctor who delivered the disheartening news. I felt as though his heart was hurting for us and I felt comfort in the fact that he was going to really take care of my baby. Dr. Zurack gave us information and pointed us in the right direction. He has stayed over past his normal schedule to accommodate us and has called me at home on multiple occasions regarding my son. These actions are not only surprising for any doctor, but especially Dr. Zurack because he had decided to retire years back and just couldn't seem to do it. Thank goodness. He works two days a week now. I feel so sad inside thinking of the day when he decides to retire for real. I wish I could have him another 17 years."

Dr. Michael Callaghan is a brilliant doctor intellectually. But not only that, he has a great bedside manner, a patient demeanor, and even explains the details of the illness he specializes in whenever I need him to. He never forces his opinions on his patients and he listens to us! I have his cell phone number, his email addresses, his office number and his beeper number. I emailed him and by phone he emailed me back in about FOUR minutes! Whenever I call he returns my call within minutes. I never feel like I'm intruding no matter what time I call or email him - even on weekends. My son's new diagnosis has often left me on edge and sometimes less than reasonable. He has always been helpful, kind, and comforting. He's one of the good guys and we're so lucky to have him!!! He is my family's blessing.
Thank you, Dr. Callaghan.
