Farmington Founders Festival Returns in Downtown Farmington

Help this Oakland County city celebrate its fest's 50th anniversary July 18-20, 2014. It's a weekend of family movies, kids activities fireworks and more fun.

Did you hear? The Farmington's Founders Festival is turning 50 this year! Be a part of the birthday celebration July 18-20, 2014 – and go "play in the streets" of downtown Farmington, where all the fun will be waiting.

Serving as the event's new host, the Greater Farmington Area Chamber of Commerce is doing things up big with music, food, movies, crafts and activities for all ages. If you're feeling creative, visit the Crafters Marketplace and take a walk through the Farmers & Artisan Market to check out the goods.

Want more action? Hoop and holler at the annual parade on Saturday morning – and enjoy live entertainment all weekend by cheering on some talented metro Detroit locals. Take a stroll through the downtown sidewalk sales, too, and then stop by the petting zoo and kiddy rides.

There's plenty of evening fun, as well. At 9:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, catch a 15-minute fireworks show. Then, stick around and grab a blanket and some snacks – because, after your kids get worn out from the day, there are movies under the stars. Catch popular new and old flicks: Mary Poppins plays Friday (which was also "born" in 1964!), and Pitch Perfect is Saturday.

Any day you visit, be sure to come hungry: After taking a trip to Riley Park for the Go Playground Kids Zone, treat your family to pizza, pretzels, hot dogs, barbecue, elephant ears and more from local vendors set up throughout the event.

Event times are as follows:

  • Friday-Saturday: 10 a.m.-10 p.m.
  • Sunday: 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

See the Metro Parent listing for more on the 50th annual Farmington Founders Festival this July.
