Quake on the Lake
July 20-22, 2012
- Where: Pontiac Lake State Recreation Area, 2201 N. Williams Lake Road, Waterford
- Times: 4-10 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m.-11 p.m. Saturday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday
- Cost: $10/adults, $5/ages 5-12, free/4 and under
It's a big year as both the national and world inboard champs take over the lake. Watch the high-speed hydroplanes by day and concerts by night, including Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels opening night.
Festival of Chariots (Rath Yatra)
July 21, 2012
- Where: Starts at Novi Civic Center; ends at Fuerst Park at 10 Mile and Taft roads
- Time: 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday
- Cost: Free
This three-mile parade (11 a.m.) in Novi features a 40-foot-tall hand-pulled chariot; then there's music, food and more, all celebrating India's spirituality and culture.
Czech and Slovak Festival
July 21-22, 2012
- Where: Sokol Cultural Center, 23600 W. Warren Road, Dearborn Heights
- Times: 1-10 p.m. Saturday, noon-7 p.m. Sunday
- Cost: $5/person
Music is the continuous theme for this shindig, but there's plenty of food, too, including goulash and stuffed cabbage. Lots of activities on tap for the kiddies, too.
Washtenaw County 4-H Youth Show
July 22-27, 2012
- Where: Washtenaw Farm Council Grounds, 5055 Ann Arbor-Saline Road, Ann Arbor
- Times: Vary by day, Sunday-Friday
- Cost: Free
This midway-free fest is focused on animals and projects galore, all run by 800 local 4-H kids. Everything's free except the food.
Sounds & Sights Festival
July 26-28, 2012
- Where: Downtown Chelsea
- Times: Vary by day, Thursday-Saturday
- Cost: Free
Live tunes arrive by night; by day, visit a classic car show and Kid Zone activities and open-air market.
Orchard Lake Fine Art Show
July 27-29, 2012
- Where: West Bloomfield, south of Maple west of Orchard Lake Road on Powers and Daly streets
- Times: 5-9 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Saturday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday
- Cost: $5/admission, free/ages 12 and under, free/parking
In year 10, explore 200 artists and the K-8 art competition; you'll also find kids' fun like plaster painting, T-shirt tie dying and candle making.
Old Mill Arts N' Crafts Festival

Great stuff to see and do at this annual fest that includes a food court, daily entertainment, face painting and activities for the kids.
Arab & Chaldean Festival

Turning 41, this jumbo celebration has a Saturday kids' fair, Sunday fashion show and Middle Eastern food, vendors, culture, customs entertainment and more.
