Stars and Stripes Festival in Mount Clemens

This family Independence Day fair features fireworks and a laser show, live music and carnival fun for kids June 29-July 1, 2012

This year's Stars and Stripes Festival in Mount Clemens has it all – live bands on multiple stages, carnival rides and games, both fireworks and a laser light show – even a Banana Derby (read on to find out what that's all about) – all hitting Macomb County June 29-July 1, 2012.

The carnival features attractions for all ages, with 12 rides in the kiddy area and another 16 on the main midway drag, along with traditional carnival food and games. Discounted carnival wristbands are available at Big Boy restaurants in Mount Clemens, Clinton Township and New Baltimore.

That's just for starters. To get high-energy kids revved, you'll definitely want to check out the BMX Show and Micro Reality Stock Car Racing – in which participants stand at a full-sized steering console and direct a radio-controlled racecar.

Loads of live performances are also in store – from groups such as Buckcherry, Skid Row and Eddie Money – on three different stages. And, just for children, the ABC Magic Fountain offers fun activities including magic shows and a meet-and-greet with Cinderella and friends, plus Spiderman.

Festival patrons can honor our armed forces by attending this year's Salute to the Military with five branches of the U.S. military, along with visiting the Vietnam Traveling Memorial Wall, on display during the entire event.

Animal lovers get plenty of treats, too, such as the Classic K9 Dog Shows and Banana Derby – where Capuchin monkeys Bobo and Giligan T. Monkey ride racing dogs like jockeys, with multiple heats and plenty of audience participation.

Melrose Pyrotechnics presents a fantastic Independence Day fireworks show Friday at 10 p.m. But the sky candy doesn't end there. The ITC Laser Spectacular, which has doubled in size since last year, lights things up at 10 p.m. Saturday.

Parking is available for $5-$10 at county and city parking lots in Mount Clemens – but there is a free, nonstop shuttle service that will take you from the Farmer's Market Lot (where there is free parking) to the festival site.

This year's festival happens on the following days:

  • Friday-Saturday: 11 a.m.-midnight
  • Sunday: 11 a.m.-10 p.m.
