On sweltering summer days, sometimes a scoop (or two) of ice cream can really hit the spot. With dozens of fun, unique ice cream joints sprinkled around southeast Michigan, from metro Detroit to Ann Arbor and beyond, there's bound to be someplace new to check out. You can start by giving one of these local ice cream parlors a try!

Ashby's Sterling Ice Cream Parlor

This new ice cream shop in Washtenaw County is set to open in June 2014, so be sure to call before you head out there! It features 24 delicious flavors that kids will love – including chocolate chip and jasmine with caramelized ginger.

Calder's Dairy Store & Ice Cream Parlor

Try a real, fresh-from-the-farm experience at this ice cream shop. Made with milk from their personal cows, each batch is crafted by hand at their farm in Carleton and served up here. Bloo Moo and Fudge Swirl are just two of their whopping 34 flavors.

This ice cream parlor, with retro decor reminiscent of the 1950s, serves French Alinosi Ice Cream in the sundae of your choice. Flavors include classics like Butter Pecan and Maple Walnut, as well as quirky choices like Chocolate Indulgence, Pumpkin and Cinnamon.

Clark's Ice Cream & Yogurt

In 1942, it was just a roadside stand. Now, Erma's is a two-location custard powerhouse. In addition to traditional vanilla and chocolate custard flavors, Erma's Original Frozen Custard offers different unique flavors every week – such as Bavarian Cheesecake, Root Beer Cooler and Coconut Cream Pie.

Farmhouse Coffee and Ice Cream

Next time you're spending a hot day shopping at Eastern Market, stop by this shop right on Russell Street. Not only do they serve Michigan-made Hudsonville ice cream, but also other local products – such as Faygo and Better Made Potato Chips. Fun fact: This is the first ice cream parlor to set up shop in Eastern Market since the district was founded in 1891!

Ray's Ice Cream

Now at its firehouse-inspired digs (complete with fire truck!), Wally's has perfected the classic ice cream flavors. Try your Wally's ice cream between two cookies, called a Chocolate Cookie Monster. Also available for you to sink your teeth into are banana splits, hot fudge cream puffs, strawberry shortcake and more. Yum!
