With vacation season heating up, parents and kids are itching to get outside. And luckily, southeast Michigan's June grab bag of shebangs gets the job done – oodles of times over. Soak up the Detroit River breeze, buy some quirky art (or make a craft of your own), get your Motor City car fix filled, get a midway ride thrill and, of course, sink your teeth into some of the tastiest fare for miles around, from German grub to sweet strawberries. Every weekend promises new adventures, so make lots of way for June fun!

German American Festival

June 1-2, 2012

  • Where: Germanie Club Downriver, 23156 King Road, Brownstown
  • Times: 5 p.m.-midnight Friday, 2 p.m.-midnight Saturday
  • Cost: $3/admission, free/under 16

For the 40th annual, they break out the bratwurst and schnitzel and beer for the adults – and the kids have a great time, too, with inflatables, soccer and games.

Grosse Ile IslandFest

June 1-3, 2012

  • Where: Grosse Ile Municipal Airport, 9601 Groh Road, Grosse Ile
  • Times: 4 p.m.-midnight Friday, 8 a.m.-midnight Saturday, 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday
  • Cost: Free

Lots of music throughout the three-day fest, but there's also a carnival, island tours, airplane and helicopter rides, arts and craft activities, parade and food galore.

Mount Clemens Art Fair

June 1-3, 2012

  • Where: Downtown Mount Clemens
  • Times: Noon-9 p.m. Friday, 11 a.m.-8 p.m. Saturday, noon-6 p.m. Sunday
  • Cost: Free

The Hot Rod Power Tour preview night kicks off the festivities that include art in all media, a children's tent with make-and-take arts and crafts and entertainment.

Art on the Grand

June 1-3, 2012

  • Where: Grand River Avenue and Farmington Road, Downtown Farmington
  • Times: 6-11 p.m. Friday (adult-geared "pre-glow"), 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Saturday-Sunday
  • Cost: Free

Fun art activities for kids, music and over 120 artists return to Grand River Avenue for a second artistic year. You'll find plenty of live music and strolling entertainers, too.

Lyon Township Kite Festival

June 2, 2012

  • Where: Lyon Township Atchison Park, by Lyon Township Municipal Center, 5800 Grand River Ave., New Hudson
  • Times: 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
  • Cost: Free

Back for a fourth year, this celebration features kite flying for kids of all ages! Catch a parade, kite decorating, caricature artist, radio control boat races, petting zoo, Windjammers Professional Kite Flyers and tons more.
