Family St. Patrick's Day Events in Southeast Michigan

Green is the theme of March 2014 as both young and old celebrate St. Paddy's Day with a variety of events – including parades, performances and more

As parents, you've probably ditched the green beer and lines at The Old Shillelagh for kid-friendly parades, library events and more on St. Patrick's Day. But that doesn't mean these green-themed shindigs can't be a blast. From the annual St. Patrick's Parade in Corktown, Detroit to some very cool dances for kids with special needs, there's something for every southeast Michigan family to do during March 2014.

St. Patrick's Day Parade in Royal Oak

This year's fun kicks off with the Lucky Dash 5K at 10:45 a.m., followed by this annual parade, which is hosted by the Norman O'Brien Division of the Ancient Order of Hibernians. Some 300 participants are included. Irish clans compete to outdo each other's floats – judges pick winners, too – by showing off their Irish pride and heritage. There's an afterglow featuring Irish food (for sale) at Eagles Club, 401 E. 11 Fourth St.

For 56 years, this Corktown classic has brought some Irish pride to the streets. So don your green and catch the fun! Marching, pipe and drum bands – along with floats, clowns and more – will walk the streets in celebration. The fun kicks off with the 32nd annual Corktown race, which includes a kids quarter mile at 9:30 a.m.

Pre-registration is required for this TriceraTots Puppet Theatre show. Watch what unfolds when four furry friends find a four-leaf clover. Kids will even get the chance to decorate a four-leaf pin to wear on St. Paddy's Day.

Work off those St. Paddy's Day calories a day before the main event at this annual race, which features a 10K, 5K and one-mile run. As usual, all participants receive an L. Jordan-brand "tech shirt" for being a part of the race. But this year, the first 4,000 participants that register will receive a knit beanie hat from Kona Running Company.

Plus, at 5:30 p.m., there's the Pot O' Gold Road Race, which is a four-mile run and walk.
