Marche du Nain Rouge Festival and Parade in Detroit
Mischievous little ones will fit right in on March 24, 2013 at this fourth annual event to drive out the city's legendary bad-luck dwarf
Every kid loves a parade, especially one that encourages him or her to wear masks and dress up in costumes. Your child can do exactly that on March 24, 2013, at the fourth annual Marche du Nain Rouge in Detroit.
Each spring, Detroiters – and suburbanites – rally together in the thousands to rout out the red demon that has plagued the city with bad luck for centuries.
The parade begins at 1 p.m. in the parking lot of Traffic Jam & Snug, which is located at 511 W. Canfield St., and heads along Cass Avenue, through the North Corridor before ending at Temple Street.
This year, families are invited to stop in at City Bird, next to the parade start, between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., and make a mask to wear during the parade, as well as enjoy some refreshments and music from DJ Big Time America.
After donning masks, take the munchkins to watch the revelers – dressed in crazy costumes and riding in wildly-decorated chariots – march the maniacal dwarf out of Detroit, Mardi Gras-style.
Lots of folks dress the kiddies up in costumes and even decorate their wagons. Be sure to bring your camera for what's sure to be some a great photo op.
Not sure about parking? The Detroit Bus Co. discounted tickets for this event. Buses depart from Imperial in Ferndale (located at 22828 Woodward Ave.) at 9:40 and 11 a.m. and Gusoline Alley at 309 S. Center St. in Royal Oak at 10 and 11 a.m. Return trips leave at 2 and 5 p.m.
Local businesses help celebrate the day with specials and discounts, too. The Hub of Detroit offers 10 percent off all standard bicycle tune-ups, Motor City Brewing Works has a special "Effigy Pizza" and Source Booksellers offers discounts on Detroit almanacs, to name a few.
