Motor City Hot Rod & Racing Expo Zooms into Novi

The Suburban Collection Showplace hosts this first-time show featuring an RC car track, super fast vehicles and autographs from drivers March 22-23, 2014

Feel the need – for speed? Rev up those engines and drive over (minding posted limits, of course) to the very first Motor City Hot Rod & Racing Expo, vrooming its way into Novi's Suburban Collection Showplace March 22-23, 2014, a Saturday and Sunday.

This inaugural event is all about high-performance machines. Fast-car enthusiasts, this one's for you. Ogle some serious hot rods in person. In fact, a total 144 exhibits are planned to pack some 65,000 square feet, with displays highlighting everything from muscle cars to the latest from your fave auto companies.

A couple must-sees? RM Motorsports of Wixom is hauling in a rare Dodge Tomahawk, a giant silver "quadricycle" that's kind of a mash-up of a hot rod and a motorcycle. And Nitroplate of Nashville, Tenn. – a company that "coats" stuff like exhausts pipes and hood hinges – shows off its Rat Trap Altered, a zippy racer.

Kids will want to hit the Ready, Set, Race! course. Here, they use steering wheels to "drive" remote-controlled machines around a big track. "There is little to no wait time," says organizer Luke Bogacki – about five to 10 minutes max. "No age requirement" either, he adds. "Driver just has to be tall enough to reach the wheel – or have a parent willing to hold them!" It runs the duration of the show.

Meet the real-life cool kids who drive these rip-roaring autos around, too, at the Saturday autograph session. That includes 31-year-old Shawn Langdon, a pro drag racer who's the reigning "top fuel world champ," and Bethany Crick, who, at age 17, holds the title of "junior dragster world champion." They're here 3-5 p.m.

If you're a big enthusiast, mom or dad, check out the educational seminars, roundtable discussions, racing retailers and even pop into the "M1 Concourse," filled with repair/restoration shops, a members' clubhouse, test track and more.
