America's Thanksgiving Parade in Detroit

Presented by Art Van Furniture, southeast Michigan's spectacle returns for its 87th annual march down Woodward Avenue with a 'Downtown Our Town' theme

One of America's oldest and most celebrated parades is back and ready to bring joy to families all over the state and nation. Produced by The Parade Company – and one of Michigan's traditional segues into the holiday season – this year, America's Thanksgiving Parade presented by Art Van Furniture in Detroit steps off at a slightly earlier-than-usual 8:45 a.m. time on Thursday, Nov. 28. It makes its way from Woodward Avenue and Kirby Street and ends just south of Campus Martius Park on Congress Street.

For its 87th celebration, America's Thanksgiving Parade boasts a "Downtown Our Town" theme – in representation of downtown Detroit, the metro Detroit area, state and the entire region, according to The Parade Company's website. The two-hour shebang is broadcast live on WDIV Local 4 TV and on News/Talk 760 WJR radio.

Sure to be a treat, the 2013 version is complete with a whopping nine new floats designed, created and built by The Parade Company, with sponsors like Radio Disney and Ford Motor Company. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan backs a "Path of Confidence" float – which features a life span from stork to kids' soccer game to wedding cake – as well as "Art Van Wonderland," the brain child of this year's parade title sponsor.

Looking for some great family entertainment before the big turkey dinner? What's more fun than 12 bands, eight balloons, a Big Head Corps of 150, more than 25 floats and a Distinguished Clown Corps (composed of over 150 clowns) toting 300,000 beads to give away on Thanksgiving Day? Whether it's a recurring family tradition or a budding one – with a vintage papier-mache heads showcase, crafts for kids, music, food and more – America's Thanksgiving Parade is a prime choice.

Recognized as one of the best Thanksgiving parades in the country, second in size to Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York, the parade will broadcast in more than 140 cities nationwide and feature the Detroit Tigers' recently retired third-winningest manager, Jim Leyland, as grand marshal.

Whether you're in one of the 10,000 grandstand seats or watching from the sideline, bundle up and pack a Thermos with your favorite warm drink, because you won't want to miss the grand finale: Santa himself riding his sleigh all the way from the North Pole to Detroit to visit the D.
