Equestrian Expo at Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi

This Oakland County event offers a fantastic experience for horse enthusiast kids and parents in southeast Michigan Nov. 9-11, 2012

If anyone in your family loves horses, you'd better be in Novi Nov. 9-11, 2012, for the annual Equestrian Expo! That's where you can enjoy live horse entertainment, get helpful riding and care tips, and shop for horse-related merchandise.

A big highlight this year? See horse entertainer and Hollywood horse stunt man Tommie Turvey ride and talk bout his training techniques. Turvey is a lifelong horse handler and rider who has been a stunt actor in movies and television, including AMC's The Walking Dead and Batman movie The Dark Knight. Turvey has been sought-after as a horse trainer for his no-nonsense training ideas, which he will share with audiences during the expo. He promotes a method of consistent, day-to-day training to achieve healthy, responsible relationships with horses.

You'll also get to hear guest speakers like Nancy Harm, a professional parade horse rider, and Steve Shaver, a horse dental-care expert who will share his knowledge and tips for owners.

New this year is the first ever Youth Riding Competition, running the whole weekend with prizes available for winners. Horse owners and riders can register for $50 per rider/horse. Events include Indiana Flag Race, Pole Bending, Stakes Race and Keyhole. You'll be provided with your own stall – and there's even a contest for "Best Stall Decoration."

There will be plenty of cool faux-animals to see, too, at this year's model horse show – featuring hand-sculpted models of all kinds of breeds and sizes of horses on display.

The event is at the Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi for three days – 1-8 p.m. Friday Nov. 9, 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Saturday Nov. 10 and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday Nov. 11.

Ticket prices are $10/adults, $5/kids 6-12 and free for kids 6 and under. Parking is $5.
