Indoor & Outdoor Ice Skating Rinks in Southeast Michigan

Take the kids for a glide across the ice at one of these family friendly places in Macomb, Oakland, Washtenaw and Wayne counties.

City of Birmingham Ice Sports Arena

Even if you just want your kids to learn how to make their way around the rink in blades, there are classes available at this local ice arena. The basic skill skating program starts Nov. 26. They offer hockey and figure skating lessons, too! Check out the web for a variety of classes, open skate times and extended holiday hours.

Farmington Hills Ice Arena

For 70,000 square feet of sheer ice, visit this community rink. It's also home to the Farmington Hills Figure Skating Club and the Farmington Hills Hockey Association, but they welcome all ages and abilities – learn-to-skate is for 3 years and older.

John Lindell Ice Arena

Home to several youth and adult leagues, along with figure skating clubs, this busy ice rink also makes time for open public skating. They offer family skating and adult skating sessions. Get your freestyle on at Sk8 Jamz – Friday night skating with jammin' beats for $10 (includes skate rental). Check the website for details.

Kensington Metropark

With two natural outdoor ice skating rinks to chose from, there's plenty of room – whether you're coming as a family or bringing a hockey crew for an impromptu practice. You'll need to bring your own skates, since there are no rentals. Warm up in the heated boat rental building after your skate.

Lake St. Clair Metropark

Pack up the hot chocolate – along with your skates – and venture to this outdoor skating rink. Parking and picnic tables are close by when you're ready for a cocoa break. They have special events – Lunch with Santa & Mrs. Claus is 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1; call ahead for details and tickets.

Lower Huron Metropark

Tucked in the woods, you'll find two outdoor frozen ponds (when it's cold enough, three) to skate this winter season. Bring your own skates and goodies to make s'mores. Park staff makes bonfires for keeping your hands – and marshmallows – toasty.

Mount Clemens Ice Arena/Fitness Center

Enjoy open skate or other cool events like Friday DJ nights at this Macomb favorite. Know anyone 4 years or older who has ever wanted to try hockey? Well, they can during Try Hockey for Free at 12:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 18. Just show up and learn to play since equipment is provided.
