The Nutcracker at the Detroit Opera House

This delightful holiday classic ballet about a young girl and her Nutcracker prince comes to the stage in Detroit Nov. 23-25, 2012.

You know the music and you know the story – now, see it live. The enchanting tale of a girl, her wooden soldier and a land of sugarplums comes to life during the BalletMet Columbus production of Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker at the Detroit Opera House.

The show, which plays the D Nov. 23-25, 2012, is an adaptation of E.T.A. Hoffman's The Nutcracker and the King of Mice – and this version is narrated by Sir Roger Moore, the legendary voice of James Bond on screen in the '70s and '80s.

Young children are in for a big treat during family matinees, held at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Doors open at noon for a bevy of fun activities, including pre-show photo ops with Santa and the Nutcracker (bring your camera!), live reindeer before the show, professional face painting ($5 donation) and a kid-friendly buffet lunch available for purchase. At the end of these shows, a Sugar Plum Parade appears on stage.

As ever, the tale is sure to captivate. It's Christmas Eve at the Stahlbaum house when a young girl name Clara receives a special Nutcracker doll as a present. In a jealous rage, her brother Fritz breaks the Nutcracker. It is quickly repaired, but Clara, who's still worried about her doll, checks on him during the night – falling asleep with him in her arms and entering the Land of the Sugar Plum Fairy.

More than 100 performers help to recreate Clara's dream sequence, which includes the famed fight scene between the Nutcracker and the Mouse King, the Land of Snow and the Land of Sweets.

  • Ticket prices range from $29 to $76 and show times are as follows:
  • Friday, Nov. 23: 7:30 p.m.
  • Saturday, Nov. 24: 2:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
