Wayne County Lightfest Holiday Light Display

This annual drive-through holiday tradition, celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2013, is open for your family to visit Nov. 14-Dec. 31

It's known as "the Midwest's largest and longest light show" – and it's right here in your backyard! Families can head to Hines Park in Westland to experience the Wayne County Lightfest, a local holiday favorite celebrating its 20th birthday this year, running Nov. 14-Dec. 31, 2013.

With more than 45 holiday light displays – that's north of 1 million lights, according to Wayne County – families are sure to feel that Christmas cheer. Drive through the Merriman Hollow area of Hines Park while warm and snug in your car. Pop on some holiday tunes to make it an experience to remember.

Before the light display opens for the season, metro Detroiters are welcome to kick off the event – and see the spectacle early – by participating in the Lightfest 8K Fun Run/Walk at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 12.

Or maybe you'd rather pedal your way through the Merriman Hollow area of Hines Park? Bike Through the Lights starts at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 13. Registration for both events is $20/person until noon Nov. 11, and then it's $25/person. For kids high school age and younger, the cost is $12/person.

The Wayne County Lightfest officially starts Thursday, Nov. 14, and you're invited to the grand opening event at 6 p.m. to get a sneak preview of the lights. This free event is complete with music and fireworks – plus refreshments.

Then, Nov. 15-Dec. 31, 2013, families are welcome to drive through the more than four miles of glistening decorations from 7 to 10 p.m. any day of the week. The display is closed Christmas Day. Cars can enter at 7651 Merriman Road, Westland, between Warren Road and Ann Arbor Trail. The entry cost is $5/car.
