International Festival at the Southfield Pavilion

This 90th annual celebration returns Oct. 4-6, 2013 and brings a world of food, fun and festivities, from dance to crafts, perfect for the whole family

Ever wanted to travel the world? Well, you don't have to go far and you don't have to pay much – because the world is coming to you. The International Festival is back at the Southfield Pavilion Oct. 4-6, 2013 – so skip the suitcases and bring the whole family for a bargain multicultural weekend!

Presented by the City of Southfield and International Institute of Metropolitan Detroit, the 90th annual International Festival (formerly the Old World Market) is a cultural event that celebrates food, customs and crafts from all around the world.

It all kicks off on Friday, Oct. 4 with the swearing-in ceremony of new citizens, then running through Sunday. Overall event hours are as follows:

  • 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday
  • 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Saturday
  • 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Sunday

Celebrated cultures include Indian, Polish, African, Mexican, Middle Eastern, Spanish, Greek, Korean and many more.

So what is there to do at the International Festival? Here's a sampler:

  • Paint masks at art workshops, provided by the Detroit Institute of Arts
  • View exhibits of attire and musical instruments from different cultures
  • Peruse and purchase handmade crafts, jewelry and unique gifts from over 30 vendors (which will be perfect for the gift-giving season)
  • Watch demonstrations, such as Ukrainian egg painting and decorating
  • Listen to international music and watch dance performances from different cultures
  • Purchase a variety of foods that are sure to make your taste buds sing. There are even American foods for those who prefer the flavor of home.

In addition to these enriching, fun-filled activities, the festival is affordable! A weekend pass is just $3/person or $5 per family – with free parking, to boot.

So if you're looking for something fun for the entire family, make this your day trip destination. Check out the Metro Parent listing for more information on the 2013 International Festival in Southfield.
