Halloween month is ready to scare up some wicked fun in metro Detroit – and beyond! Whether you're into the creepy stuff or the cider of the season, our roundup of kid- and parent-pleasing festivals and fairs offer plenty to sink your fangs into. Read on for some of the best annual events to haunt the region.
DLECTRICITY Art and Light Festival
Oct. 5-6, 2012
- Where: Woodward Corridor, Midtown, Detroit
- Times: 5 p.m.-2 a.m.
- Cost: free
Curious and fantastic things glow in the dark at this first-ever free event in the D that merges art, architecture and sound, casting Woodward in a whole new light.
Trenton Scarecrow Festival
Oct. 5-7, 2012
- Where: downtown Trenton
- Times: 6-10:30 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m.-10:30 p.m. Saturday, 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Sunday
- Cost: free, except carnival attractions
Bring your decked out scarecrow for the annual contest or vote on your favorite. There's a Scarecrow Idol singing contest Friday, Battle of the Bands Saturday, a dog costume contest Sunday and much more.
International Festival
Oct. 5-7, 2012
- Where: Southfield Pavilion, 26000 Evergreen Road, Southfield
- Times: noon-7 p.m. Friday, 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Saturday, 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Sunday
- Cost: $3/person or $5/family
Celebrate the many cultures of the world with ethnic music, jewelry, crafts and events for kids.
Car Tunes Car Show
Oct. 6, 2012
- Where: downtown Northville
- Times: 11 a.m.-4 p.m.
- Cost: free admission
Jam to the DJ's tunes while you're checking out classic cars from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., followed by awards. Live music from Steve King and the Dittlies is 1-3 p.m.
Dexter Apple Daze
Oct. 6, 2012
- Where: Monument Park, 8558 Ann Arbor St., Dexter
- Times: 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
- Cost: free
This annual event features a car show, crafts, food and fun for kids, including hayrides and pony rides.
Harvest Happening
Oct. 6 (Oct. 7 rain date), 2012
- Where: Hess-Hathaway Park, 825 S. Williams Lake Road, Waterford
- Times: 11 a.m.-5 p.m.
- Cost: free admission; hayride: $1.50/adults, $1/kids; $7/activity wristbands; $4/pony rides
