Huron Applefest

Oct. 5-6, 2013

For its 34th year, this festival returns with an old-time fiddling contest (see it at noon Saturday), parade, apple pie contest and activities and fun for the family.

Wilson Barn Pumpkin Fest (and Haunted Barn)

Oct. 5-30, 2013

The pumpkin fest has fresh pumpkins, cornstalks and pony and hayrides during the weekdays (on Saturdays and Sundays, there is also cider, doughnuts, hot chocolates and crafts). Weekends also have a haunted barn, with some thrills and chills for all (scary factor is adjusted based on age).

Clawson Fall Festival

Come over for free family fun including hayrides, farm animals, inflatable and games. Food tucks and baked goods, too. Bonfire is at 6:15 p.m.

Hallowe'en in Greenfield Village

Oct. 11-13, 18-29 and 25-27, 2013

This annual favorite is back with its trail of jack-o'-lantern dotted with colorful characters giving out treats (including the Headless Horseman). Be sure to wear costumes – and register for this event that's not-to-scary fun for kids (it fills up fast!).

Zoo Boo

Oct. 11-13, 18-20 and 25-27, 2013

Small kids are welcome to stroll a half-mile loop in the zoo to gather treats passed out by dressed-up characters – plus there's entertainment in the Zoo Boo Revue and more. Make your reservations early for this "merry not scary" event; this one sells out!

Eastern Market Harvest Festival

Michigan's plentiful harvest is the star at this popular farmer's market. Visit for games, to check out the apple pie-baking contest (and sample some, too), plus enjoy pumpkin carving, hula hooping and a scavenger hunt.

Stonewall Pumpkin Festival

Swing by earlier to carve a pumpkin and enjoy activities like pumpkin bowling, the pioneer playground, music, hayrides, food, fire trucks, crafts and more. The community pumpkin lighting is in the evening – and a sight to behold.

Taylor Fall Fest

This annual event features arts and crafts for sale, pumpkin decorating (while supplies last), bounce houses, hayrides and more fun stuff for kids.

Halloween Festival

Spook-free fun is in store for younger kids at this favorite yearly event that has games, entertainment, hayrides and candy.

Boo at the Burgh

Roam around the haunted paths at this park and enter a pumpkin contest (ages 11 and under). There's a special earlier "frightless" fun time for ages 8 and under on Saturday, too.

Trick-or-Treat Trail
